New house. Burns on worktops

But if a strange one but a house we are moving to has burns on the worktops in the kitchen. There's a couple and they've bubbled up. No idea how someone has managed that but anyway. Is there a way to repair or cover them. Is there tricks I don't know about? TIA

What’s it made of?

BettyBobble · 28/06/2025 08:32

That's something I don't know. They are laminated but I assumed all worktops were Formica and not burnable. I'll grab some photos when I go over today and upload here. It's such a shame and a shame the letting agent have no intention to replace them or make good

Worktops are heat resistant up to a point, not heat proof. You can't put hot pans on them. That will probably be what the previous occupant did.

Maybe get a couple of worktop protectors and put them over the damaged areas to hide them.

Formica burns. Always use a protective mat.

Also make sure the burns are noted in your inventory - you don’t want to be blamed for it when you leave.

Very cheap laminate worktops aren't heatproof and can be burned by pans. I did it by accident once in a rental because it didn't occur to me a worktop wouldn't be able to handle a pan being placed on it! I now have an Ikea laminate countertop and it handles hot pans absolutely fine. I tested it quite thoroughly with an offcut first. 🤷‍♀️

You'll need some cloth or wooden pot stands to protect it from further damage, agree to photograph and have it marked in inventory so you don't get charged for it later.

It might also be worth testing the cooker esp if it's electric to check it seems to be working properly. Sometimes if the thermostat goes in them they can get hotter than they are supposed to.

If it’s a rental then I wouldn’t bother trying to repair it if the letting agent is t interested. Make sure you take photos and submit them to prove you are not responsible.

Invest in a nice worktop saver to cover the marks where posssible.

Thank you all of your suggestions. We are going to purchase some nice worktop savers and note it in the inventory.
