How the hell are you supposed to take care of a jute rug

Should I not have had one in the dining room? I've had it for about 6 weeks and so far I've spilled tea coffee orange juice and water on it plus some pasta and pesto and a banana. It says you are not allowed to clean it with water.

What are you supposed to clean it with then? So far I've just dabbed it and put baking powder on it and it looks a bit paler in those places.

Is there any method or product anyone knows about but actually keeps jute looking fairly decent?

I was going to buy one. Don't think I will now.

Yup, they're pointless. All sorts of nastiness festers in them if you put them under a dining table with a rug pad underneath. Voice of experience. 😭

Yep, we threw ours out for the same reason. Impossible to hoover and when we would lift it, the dirt layer it left behind underneath was disgusting. Ours was huge so ridiculously heavy which meant taking it outside regularly to beat the dirt out was a no go too.
Replaced with a short pile rug that we can vax if there are any spillages, so much better!

I wouldn’t have any rug under a dining table for this reason. Even if it’s washable who wants to have to wash and dry a rug frequently ?

HugoYorway · 03/06/2025 22:51

Give it away and get a washable rug.

Quite.
I'd have one if the floor was carpeted or needed to be protected.

Try getting an indoor outdoor rug. That way you can take it outside and hose it down.

HugoYorway · 04/06/2025 11:47

@Mosaic123 , that is what I'd do. Spills happen.

You can get dry cleaning powder for jute rugs. Bit like dry shampoo I guess. You can use some water on jute but it can shrink and discolour so best to minimise (and you definitely can't use wet carpet shampoo).

I got rid of mine. Handy as a cat scratching mat and that’s about it, lol. Get dirty, and no way really of cleaning them properly.
