Confused about carpets!

Need new carpet for hall stairs landing lounge and dining room. Currently have wool carpet that was here when we moved in 12 years ago, which looks okay still except for being threadbare on bottom stair and very moth eaten under furniture (have tried everything against moths, to no avail). Moths mean we don't want to risk wool, but are wary of polypropylene looking flattened in a few years. Online reasearch suggests nylon is long lasting, but nowhere seems to sell nylon carpets in our area.
Any advice or suggestions really welcome!

I've been told that polypropylene carpets wear much better now than they did 10 years ago, but I'm also in the same dilemma.

Good quality wool carpets are always the best. Most carpet makers will show the wear ratings or advise which are best for high traffic areas such as stairs or corridors.

We’ve had fab new carpets recently, they’re 80/20 wool/nylon and they’re treated with a moth repellant.

beachpear · 31/05/2025 15:32

They’re from Adam Carpets which are still British made with British wool 😀

It’s quite unusual nowadays to have carpet in ground floor rooms. Why not hard floors with rugs?

ClaudeShowers · 31/05/2025 15:38

I’m with you on this, my 80/20 hall carpet complete with moth proofing has been devoured by moths. I don’t know what to do next! I was wondering about going painted floor.

Is it that unusual?

Yeah ours too. John Lewis, very expensive. Less than 2 years old 😩

We're switching to good quality polypropylene everywhere. We've got deep pile in a couple of bedrooms so far and although it looks very squashed when you move furniture it plumps up beautifully again.

Thinking of Cormar Textures for the stairs as it doesn't have a deep pile to get crushed and has a 10 year wear guarantee iirc. It's so much cheaper than wool that even if it doesn't last as long then it's not the end of the world.

Ours are 80/20 as I was led to believe they're the perfect balance between hard wearing and resistant. All in great nick, mainly about 15 years old.

I don't want hard floors and rugs, carpet throughout is much cosier and comfier underfoot.

ClaudeShowers · 31/05/2025 16:09

cormar textures for the stairs is a good shout! Thankyou for the idea. What did you use for the bedrooms?

Cormar Sensation. And I'm super happy that this thread prompted me to check this because I've realised that the particular colour we bought has been discontinued and only a few places have any left. We've only done 2 of the bedrooms so I'm going to have to get the others done ASAP!

@Ilovemrbebb my mother always goes on about wool carpets, and how long they last. She is correct, they do. However they are also ferociously expensive and I couldn't afford them, so I opted for a man made fibre carpet. Polysomething. I did this for several reasons, mainly cost, but also because I may have wanted to redecorate and may have wanted to change the carpet colour. As it turns out, it lasted for nearly 20 years. I've used man made fibre carpets ever since and have had no issues.

I don't think they're quite as soft as wool, so maybe splash out on the bedroom, but for everything else, man made fibre is perfectly adequate.

Go for something short and dense if you don't want flattening.
