Living room feels like a dining room

my walls are a creamy yellow colour with red flowers. curtains are olive green and striped. cushions are patterned. My lamp is green and red and creamy yellow to match. I followed advice to use a lot of patterns but the same colour scheme. But looking at it, something about it feels like a restaurant and it feels off. I feel like I have too many patterns. I don’t know what I can do to

Paftern on pattern on patterm rarely works.
Generally good to go is pattern on plain or plain on pattern which is what pps are recommending.
I would reuse these bits elsewhere and put plain stuff to go with the wallpaper

Ok so the patterns are not at all as I was imagining.
They are all small busy patterns.
But the colours work, they are all much more neutral than it sounded from your OP.

I think it feels old fashioned. This is partly due to the small busy patterns, which remind me of Laura Ashley style. Which you can get away with if it is a cottage style room/home
And partly due to the mix and match patterns.

More modern look would be to pattern one thing (eg curtains) and then choose a colour (not beige or grey but a good colour) on the walls.
Or keep the wallpaper and have plain curtains from the wallpaper.

And the lamps are fine if the walls are plain, but with patterned walls I would have plain lampshades.

This picture is an idea if you paint the walls:

I do like country style so I will consider neutral colour furniture. I don’t want to paint the walls because the wallpaper is new, but I will consider using the curtains in the bedroom.

It reminds me of a cosy Ye Olde Tea Shoppe.

I like the lampshade and the wallpaper but the curtains compete. They're nice but need a plain background.

It’s pretty but all a bit ‘one tone’. Try adding some accessories in deeper shades of the colours to liven it up - a rich red lamp base, an assortment of cushions in different shapes, colours and textures, a throw, vase, pictures.

Get rid of curtains and cushions, I don’t mean to throw them away - maybe use them in another room. Then go for a plain curtains: creamy or green depending on what’s available.

Tbh I quite like it OP, I was imagining something awful

JennyForeigner · 27/05/2025 22:55

Isn't there a rule that is something like 60% main colour, 30% second colour, 10% accent colour? I swear I heard it on interior design challenge and it really works.

minnienono · 27/05/2025 22:58

Move the curtains and buy plain ones?

Everything we can see in your picture is muted and neutral. The new version of traditional or country or cottage core includes colour, often quite deep colour.

I think it might be possible to change your lampshade, and apply trim down the inside edges of your curtains (can be done with fabric glue) and that way add depth, contrast snd tie it all together.

I think you should have a look at Louise Roe’s interiors, I think they might be right up your street.

Something like these pictures.
