Bright red aga in new home

We are about to move to a house with a bright red aga. I don’t particularly like agas (had one in my childhood home) but as we only plan to stay in this house for two years I don’t think it makes sense to remove it.

i am however struggling with a colour scheme for the rest of the kitchen as the aga is bright red. It’s an Edwardian house and the kitchen is a medium size. What colour unit’s and walls can I choose to tie in with the Aga? I’m struggling with this at the moment. The existing units are quality solid wood but they are orangey pine colour which I don’t like so I think I will paint them a colour. We will probably put in engineered wood as the new flooring, possibly herringbone pattern.

Any ideas?

Given you’re only in your new place for 2 years, I imagine yes you want something not overly expensive or time consuming as a solution. So for me, I would stick to neutral colours as the aga will be the dominating feature here and with such a bold colour too, I think anything other than neutral will clash too much with it.

So for me, I’d probably go with off white/grey walls and paint the units a warm cream. Having black appliances as a contrast colour would look good and match the black surface of the Aga. I’m thinking a country style. The best depiction I could find that’s similar-ish to what I’m thinking I’ve attached and will show once MN approved it 🙂

Slate grey. It will make a dramatic difference to the bright red.

goldtaps · 26/05/2025 22:40

AGA’s are such stand out pieces, they don’t need to match or coordinate. Just go with a kitchen you like!

PurpleThistle7 · 26/05/2025 22:43

I don’t know why you’re doing major renovations to a home you will be putting on the market in less than 2 years but I think light grey and red is lovely.

Black work surface and surround and white cupboards look
very striking. Or as pp suggested light grey is nice.

My friend bought a house with a bright red aga. Obviously she couldn’t live with it - it was awful. She got it resprayed cream. I think it cost only about £3k, and it looks fabulous.

The cream colour in @MoominMai 's photo goes very well with the red Aga. I could almost like it.😀

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 26/05/2025 23:10

Something like oval room blue, F and B.

Crispynoodle · 26/05/2025 23:14

Aqua!

Another one with cream colour paint and units. I like the floor as well.

We have a bright red aga in a recently acquired house. We painted the cupboards slate blue and papered the dining area in Strawberry Thief by William Morris in Crimson/slate.

We keep thinking about the whole new kitchen we want. But actually, we love this colour scheme so much that it puts us off. The whole kitchen layout does not suit, so needs must. I keep being drawn to blue kitchens though.

Pale blue

What about this sort of Wedgwood blue

I have a bright red AGA. My cupboards are white, the worktops black Corian. The breakfast bar is bright red sparkly caesarstone and the seating is retro American diner style with sparkly red seats. We don't do subtle 😁
(It's an old house)

At our last (400 year old) house we had a bright red Bertazzoni range. We painted the kitchen base cabinets F&B Oval Room Blue and the wall cupboards/walls Craig & Rose Pale Oak. To tie it all together, our splash back behind the range and sink was a red/blue/cream wallpaper with tempered glass over. Our worktops were iroko and the floor a mix of painted boards (LG Lamp Black) and original quarry tiles. We had a reclaimed larder that we originally painted Oval Room Blue too, but eventually changed to F&B Setting Plaster.

At the seating end of the kitchen we had the dreaded feature wall chimney breast papered with a Liberty wallpaper.

See attached photos of our old kitchen. (Just spotted the dusty floor!)

In my old house we had a red aga.

the kitchen was cream and wood. Kettle etc were red to tie in. It worked fine.

Princessfluffy · 27/05/2025 12:35

Ooh thank you so much everyone for the excellent ideas! I will put them on my Pinterest board and will be trying out some blues and creams and maybe also a desaturated green

We have a red pellet range and have put in black and white ceramic floor tiles and are installing a mix of old pine units, antique dresser bottoms etc some of which I have painted in Little Greene Canton rather similar scheme to @LibertyLilyand painted inside the cupboards with Little Greene Baked Cherry. We have windows in our cottage in Little Greene Cape Red so not averse to red, we also have light blue and a bright azure blue elsewhere in the house like another suggestion above. We have lime washed walls so white and a mix of oak and slate worktops. I have painted inside any units which are left as the original pine, used another Paint Blue Verditer.

TronaldDump · 27/05/2025 12:54

We have a red aga in our kitchen (inherited, I don't love it) and we have kind of sage green cabinets which look nice with it. The walls are more of a neutral warm cream. We've also gone for a red enamel kettle and red enamel toaster to tie in the colour across the kitchen. It seems to work quite well.

WeegieW · 27/05/2025 13:04

I’d love a bright red aga ❤️

In your shoes, I would try to colour match the red to a colour from one of the paint brands, and then consider using the recommended white or off-white. For example if the aga matches F&B Romesco https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/romesco do the units in Au Lait.

Blue would look nice but you have to be careful as you’ll presumably also have white somewhere and it can come across looking a bit like a VE Day street party (I am reminded of the time my DH grew a wildflower meadow full of poppies, cornflowers and daisies and passers by kept asking if it was for the Coronation- he was gutted 😂)

Romesco No.CB4 | Sample Pot | Carte Blanche

Romesco is a rich, brilliant red evocative of the classic Spanish sauce. Exclusively available for the Carte Blanche collection.

we had red again our last house the walls were painted elderflower tea ( to match tiles) by dulux and the woodwork savage ground by farrow and ball though I think it is discontinued now,
the floor was encaustic victorian minotn tiles on the floor in shades of red rich cream black and a sort of duck egg blue so introducing further colours was a bit of a no no

What about this sort of Wedgwood blue

My cabinets are this colour and I DREAM of a red aga. So fabulous. 😍 👌
