Hi,
I need a new rug for sitting room. I keep seeing rugs advertised online but I don't know what they are actually like in real life. Can anyone recommend a good rug company to buy from.
I would like it to look and feel nice but don't want to be spending ££££. I have children so needs some practicality.
Can anyone who has a lovely rug recommend a good make or where to buy please.

I had to buy about two dozen rugs when I moved house and honestly it was one of the worst things ever. Rugs seem to be either a hundred pounds or a thousand pounds and you can’t ever tell.

Dunelm is good.
Ikea is good for cheap rugs and for interesting children’s ones. They also sell billion pound rugs
Costco can be good, obviously they are massive because everything is massive but they are good quality
Next have some good ones when they have a sale

have you seen Ruggable rugs? buy on line loads of different patterns multiple sizes are either tufted or like a kelim. Best of all they can be washed in the washing machine.
I have one in a room that has direct access to a garden and I was fed up with having the previous one professionally cleaned. Perfect for children and IMO reasonably priced
if you want something a bit cheaper try Dunelm my DIL bought a nice rug from there recently.

What do the ruggable ones feel like? Do they look nice close up? Feel nice to walk on? I see them advertised just can't tell if would look good close up.

I bought a Gooch rug from John Lewis during the November sale last year, so 20% off. It’s so lovely, and it feels very nice. Sometimes when I open my phone camera I see the rug through the lens and I’m like… ooh, the colours. Not the cheapest but in the bonkers world of rug pricing still in the realms of affordable

hangingonfordearlife1 · 21/05/2025 22:48

does it feel like gooch?

I rate tk maxx for reasonably priced rugs. And I like the lack of choice as it forces me to decide ! Homesense I mean. Not Tk Maxx. I love mine. Cream will with a navy border. Was £120 and big enough for small lounge

I have one in my kitchen. They don’t feel extra cozy. I wouldn’t put them in the bedroom for example. But great for high traffic areas. You can get the extra thick underlay if you want them a bit more bouncy. But they look stunning and wash easily in the washing machine, which is perfect for a kitchen runner.

I’m a big fan of my ruggable too. It’s not super soft and snuggly but still warms up the kitchen which is porcelain tiles. I have the normal / thin top layer so maybe the tufted ones would feel more cosy.

I had a lovely one recently from Rugs Direct UK. I wanted a modern geometric style. I'd looked everywhere before finding it. Very reasonably priced too.

We love our Ruggables. We have one in the kitchen under the sink and a runner in the hall. We haven’t got the cushioned one either. Very easy to hoover and make the kitchen look so cosy.

BusyExpert · 22/05/2025 20:55

you can get a thick or a thin underlay and a tufted top or a kelim woven style. I am just about to buy a tufted one with a thicker underlay for my sitting room as I want a cosier effect. The kelim and thin underlay would be fine for a conservatory or dining room.
I like pale carpets and really appreciate the fact that you can put them in the washing machine

If you are looking for a luxurious, large rug, don't buy Ruggable. Ruggable rugs are ok if you put them in the right place and they are not too big. They are very practical in heavy wear areas and if a reasonable size they will fit in the washing machine. Anything large will not fit in the washing machine.

LibertyLily · 23/05/2025 10:47

We needed large rugs and considered Ruggable as the designs are lovely....

But I read a few bad reviews (think there was a thread on here at some point, might have been in the property section of mumsnet?) and was concerned they'd look a bit towel-like, for want of a better description. Plus, the sizes we needed wouldn't fit in a domestic washing machine.

In the end we bought ours from a variety of places - a few from Ebay (we like vintage so old Persian rugs suit our style, although these were £££), one from Liberty (used inherited money as again £££), one from the now defunct, I believe, Irugs (shipped from USA, many bad reviews at the time, but our experience was good) and Homesense, where we found a branded rug with a retail price of £1200 for £135! We also have a lucky charity shop find of a massive Oka cotton kilim, that was a fraction of the new price.

All have worn really well, but with the exception of the Irugs rug, they are cotton or hand-knotted wool, so fabulous quality.

More recently we got a jute/sisal rug from John Lewis to replace a Dunelm one that was crap. The John Lewis one has only been down a while but is already fairing better than the Dunelm, which shed and frayed from day one. Otherwise, I'd say Dunelm rugs seem pretty good - we just made a bad choice, imho.

HouseAshamed · 23/05/2025 10:56

Ikea or Dunelm. They get grubby no matter how clean you are.
Jute tends to moult and isn't washable.

Mine are cotton and came from Ikea, apart from one that is Habitat. They go in the washing machine.

I have sheepskins too but they are not on the floor. I have pets.

Cutie101 · 27/05/2025 17:51

Furniture village actually have rugs that are a sensible price. Also they often have some in the clearance section (make sure you untill it to check for marks). I actually bought one yesterday, had some stains but they are steam cleaning it for me.

Depends, if you want to buy a cheap/machine made rug then Ikea, but if you want an oriental rug or persian rug that lasts for years and it adds to the value, I would suggest PureRug I bought a living room rug from them and it is like gold, its value goes up :)
