Interesting ways to use wasted space in utility!

We have a utility room in our new house which has side by side spaces under a counter for washing machine and tumble dryer (no doors). We don’t have want a tumble dryer, has anyone come up with a clever use for this space or storage items that fit well? Priced up adding another cupboard in there but it’s not worth it for us just now.

Depending on your home style

  • hang/velcro a curtain and use as storage
  • wine rack space (for general drinks - not for particularly special wines as movement & heat from a washing machine is not ideal
  • shoe rack/those plastic drawer units from places like b&m etc and store your cleaning materials etc
  • can you put a simple & cheap shelf unit?

How much is a cupboard though?

Most of these solutions are a bit studenty-looking vs simply adding a door so you can use that space

Absolutely - in the long run we are planning to refurb so don’t want to pay the £400 we have been quoted as we would need a cupboard unit, baseboard etc fitted… it’s just something to tide us over for a year or two while we spend money on other projects

May not apply but we use that space currently for cat litter trays

What I would do then is hang a roller blind from the worktop above (£15 from JL) and use the space to store bulky items

GingerLiberalFeminist · 15/05/2025 23:00

If you're a gym addict, make a trolley with some plywood and wheels to store yoga matt, weights and rollers on?! I want this but have no space!

Pudmyboy · 16/05/2025 00:03

Collapsible crates are cheap from Argos, and you can stack them to store stuff, a possible alternative to shelving? Or something cheap from IKEA?

minipie · 16/05/2025 22:22

Oh I was going to say an under counter freezer but then you said temporary.

I like the previous poster’s roller blind and bulky items idea

stripeymonster · 16/05/2025 23:33

We have a second dishwasher there, which we brought from our old house when we moved.

Needanadultgapyear · 18/05/2025 06:48

We use plastic boxes ( from hobby craft) to store things in our spaces in our utility room that will be replaced.

MrBirling · 18/05/2025 07:56

We bulk buy things like kitchen roll, washing liquid off eBay as much cheaper, I'd be stashing that there behind a curtain.

Gabby82 · 18/05/2025 08:06

Shoe rack?

£400? B+Q sell a 600 flatpack carcass for £53, suitable door for £26 and plinth for £15.

A quick look on Marketplace and I can see a few used ones being given away free!

BeaLola · 18/05/2025 08:46

We have 2 gaps like this in our utility - we have a small extra freezer - mostly used for veg, ice cubes and desserts

In the other we have a large lidded rattan basket for storage

Communitywebbing · 18/05/2025 08:49

Cat food bowls s so you don’t keep treading in them!

Paaseitjes · 18/05/2025 09:00

A kitchen cupboard from IKEA will be a lot less than 400. It doesn't really need a baseboard

Thanks - if we did put in a unit we would have want it to match the rest which is a stone colour - the carcass / doors / plinths from the supplier plus fitting worked out at that price.
