Valance for iron bed!

Does anyone know where I can get a valance with slits on the corners so to fit around the legs of the bed? Been going mad looking for these and can't find any shop who does them! Anyone, please?

Does an iron bed need a valance?

Pretty sure valances are used to hide divan bases. An iron framed bed does not need one

Sherry1978 · 06/05/2025 12:01

It doesn't need one but I think all beds look better with a valance. Maybe that's why I can't find them !

Possibly not what you want to hear but we gave up on valances.

We have a Victorian brass and iron bed and I did find a vintage linen lace edged split valance. It was very pretty to look at but it was a real dust- catcher and an absolute pain to pull out from under the mattress to wash. In the end we binned it.

The edge of the platform base was not very beautiful so I bought some decent weight ticking fabric and re-covered it.

I had one on a wooden bed frame and just cut slits into a box style valance!

Snap RausageSoul. I was going to suggest the same.

Or to buy a "extra" flat sheet cut the strips and have it sowen to the bottom of a regular fitted sheet by an alteration /repair dry cleaners

I didn't even think of the dust issue. Thank you for bringing that to my attention x

Did you stitch the sides up once you'd cut it? Did it look OK? I think I'd be too scared to cut the fabric!

Good idea. The things I'm prepared to do for a pretty valance haha

Hemming bonding tape and a hot iron

Just cut the tape into a thin strip to fit the fold back so its not sticking to the iron

Gosh, I am learning a lot! Thanks so much. I really appreciate it x

Because it was box pleats I just literally slid the scissors up the inside fold!

Thinking back I don’t think I have had a valance since the 80s. I actually didn’t think it was a thing people did anymore

I'm really getting country homes and I've noticed they all have valances. I now think beds dont look so good without them !

Would this work if you tucked the corner flaps up under the mattress? They have other colours and sizes

We have these valances from La Redoute. My kids store stuff under their beds, and the valances help to disguise the mess.

The three "skirts" (left side, right side and foot of the bed - there is no skirt at the top of the bed) are made of quilted material but are attached to each other with thin muslin fabric. You can easily remove this so the skirts will go around the legs of the bed. The edges of each skirt are hemmed so there is no unravelling - you literally just snip out a triangle of muslin and you're ready to put it on the bed. On a cast iron bed, they look like this:

I just looked at iron beds with valances and I am not seeing country homes vibes.

FWIW I lived in a 17th century thatched cottage at one stage and yes had iron or wooden bed frames but definitely not a valance.
I thought they only had valances to hide the hideous divan bases where you don’t really need to hoover or clean under the bed otherwise they are a PITA
Why give yourself all that work, life is too short to spend it washing drying and ironing things that serve no purpose

LibertyLily · 06/05/2025 18:26

Definitely on trend for country house style imho.

I couldn't find one deep enough/right colour/linen, so cut up a linen duvet cover we already had and made my own...see pic of our Georgian cottage bedroom.

@Sherry1978 I would use a box pleated valance cut in the corners as suggested above.

We've got an antique brass bed we got from a company on the welsh borders called Seventh Heaven. We got a valance from them as we had massive storage drawers underneath it made from plywood and I certainly didn't want them on view. Never got dusty either.

FairKoala · 06/05/2025 23:36

I think the difference is I don’t really like anything under the bed

Hi personally I think they make they space underneath look tidier as not everyone wants to see storage boxes.
I use these and never had any problems.
Hope this helps x

I personally would buy an oversized duvet and an American style comforter for across the bottom for an iron bed. I thought valances disappeared years ago but I'm 63 and maybe out of the loop lol.
