Which type of window?

We are thinking of creating a window on the wall where the mirror is.
The room already has two types of window with different 'pane' divisions.
Which do you prefer, the bigger or smaller panes?

Oh photos are being reviewed; hopefully available in a minute. Sorry!

The bigger. Less restricted view then.

Ah, interesting, that's what DH says.

We asked all three of adult DC; 1 agreed with DH, the other 2 went with the smaller panes, more 'classic', in their words.
I'm going with the smaller panes and don't see it as more restricted but I appreciate other's might.
Thanks Swedish!

I think small panes if it's going to be a 'feature' window.

Oneearringlost · 20/04/2025 16:15

Well, it will be a 'feature' window, I guess, as it will change the room, and we'll have curtains, but, obviously, also functional at letting the light in.

I'm totally against a 'picture' window, with no 'panes' at all. But I'm not sure if I'm wrong.
Thank you @GoPissGirl

Bigger - less fussy, let more light in, better view and easier to clean. But if it is the same wall as either of the others it should match that one.

GildedRage · 20/04/2025 16:22

To me they should be all the same, what are the other windows like?

@GildedRage Well, the other 2 windows are both different, one bigger, one smaller, so the damage has already been done, insofar as matching!

@EffortlesslyDecluttering Same room, different wall.

I will say that I am not a fan of modern windows being divided up to mimic original antique ones. The reason they did that was because of not being able to manufacture big panes or not cheaply. I'm sure if they could have back then they would have and nobody would mock up tiny panes now because the whole point of windows is to gain light. And cleaning actual leaded windows and small frame original windows is a pain.
Having said all that I do think the whole side of a house should match so the house looks coherent. The front and back don't have to match each other but I think it is ideal if the windows from a given view do. Caveat being that there are very clever blends of very old and new that can be stunning and skilled architects do sometimes know what they are doing.

Oneearringlost · 20/04/2025 16:46

@Ambleen Yes, you've got a very good point there.
In an ideal world I would absolutely go with traditional, proper leaded panes, indeed we do have those downstairs...but it is a 1780s house, very cold and I need as much heat insulation as possible but couldn't afford the stunning and skilled blends of old and new, much as I wish we could.

Smaller ones for sure.

Oneearringlost · 20/04/2025 17:09

Oh, well, the jury seems to be squarely divided ( if I include the 3 adult DC).

I was hoping to present a persuasive argument to DH, but I dont think I'll be able to.

Maybe we'll have to flip a coin!

I suppose I should add, that the proposed window size will be a landscape rectangle, rather than square.

Really charming garden!

BigDahliaFan · 23/04/2025 11:41

I'd get one of the others changed at the same time (or the inserts removed) so they are all the same.....

GoatCatTaco · 23/04/2025 11:51

Less divisions, bigger glass panels.

orangedream · 24/04/2025 14:56

I don't like the fussy divisions on upvc windows. They look fake and stuck on. I'd have to get them changed.

HowChairsFly · 24/04/2025 21:02

I prefer no dividers added at all - but if the two the smaller is more aesthetically pleasing to me
