Leather dye

I have two French style armchairs in light tan leather. The chairs are in good condition, but I am not keen on the tan. My options are to make a cushion cover for the seat and back cushions in the hope it will make the chairs more congruous. I cannot afford to get them both recovered at the moment.

I also wondered if I could colour the leather to make them a cream colour.

Does anyone have experience of dying or painting leather from tan to a lighter colour? Is this doable?

Here’s the chair in question.

I used to be a subscriber to the Frenchic Forum on Facebook. There were always a number of members posting pictures of their painted leather furniture. Might be worth a look.

Leather furniture dyes are available. Google The Furniture Clinic All In One Leather Colourant.

Alternatively - if you are handy with a sewing machine - fabric seat and back cushions could look lovely. I made seat covers for my leather sofa when the leather ones wore.

Brilliant thank you so much! I will use the dye for the main bits of the chair but will have a go at making my own cushions overs for the seat and back. I have a sewing machine and have made a few bit, but I think this is a challenge I should try to take on.

Best of luck.

There are helpful videos on You Tube of making box cushions.
My tips are to pipe the (vertical) welt first, not the horizontal pieces and to use a hand stapler instead of pins when sewing welt to top and bottom.
