Should I match wood worktops with floor?

I'm a total renovation noob. We're changing our galley kitchen into a kitchen diner next month and at the same time replacing the whole downstairs flooring with a wood effect laminate. The worktops we've chosen at the moment are a slightly darker wood effect and I'm now wondering if this will clash? My mum reckons you can mix and match wood colours but my in laws think the floor needs to match the kitchen worktops. I've compared the floor and worktops samples in person and think it might look OK, but find it hard to visualise, and wondered if it would be a big design no-no? Any opinions welcome!

I absolutely wouldn’t match worktops and floor but I’d probably go for a different material altogether for the worktops - some kind of quartz or corian perhaps.

Thank you, that did cross my mind too, but I really like the wood effect with the kitchen we've gone for! Tricky.

This is the way!

Mine kind of match but they’re not matchy-matchy. Dark oak worktops and LVL (?) flooring (looks like wood)

I’ve matched mine (oak) but I’ve got white Quartz on the island.

If you really like it then go for it. Your mum is right different woods are fine together. I tend to consider the tone of the wood and try the go for the same, for instance, a warm oak will look good with any other warm toned wood, like pine for example. Pale ash will go better with cooler toned woods etc.
If you sit the samples together and still like them both then go for it.

Thanks so much for all your help. I agree on the tone of the wood, they are similar, just different shades. I just prefer the look of wood with the style and colours we've chosen so I think I'll either keep it or go for a slightly lighter worktop. But will keep looking at options either way.
