Table and chairs outside the front?

The front of the house is a sun trap and we have a large driveway that would take a bistro style two chairs and a table or maybe a bench with a planter. My thoughts are I wouldn’t want to keep packing them away so I’d be thinking of something weather proof but also not stealable as we do have people with vans that steal stuff occasionally so I’m a little nervous.

Any thoughts on style or design?

It's not the done thing. If your drive has some privacy, you might get away with it.

If you got a cheap but attractive set, you could try it and see if they disappear.
This sort of set probably would not get nicked:

I have a Victorian cottage with a gravel drive, and a suntrap at the front.

I bought an aluminium bench, which I can leave out all year. It's comfortable but I made a box cushion too. Some of them are really ornate, but I went for a plainer version. It cost about £100, I haven't secured it to the ground and it hasn't been stolen yet (over three years). It isn't valuable enough to be worth the bother.

‘It’s not the done thing’ I’m tickled by this. I’m not planning on attaching a washing line to it so don’t worry 🤣

That’s exactly what I was thinking. Any links you can signpost me to? The one I was looking at was £600!!!!

Haha it's the done thing where I live, depending which way your house is pointing! I get the afternoon sun at the back, but there's a terrace a couple of streets away where pretty much everyone has a couple of chairs or a bench out the front. I always think it must be lovely sociable place to live.

Actually considering getting a little table and chairs to make the most of the morning sun at the front of my house.

When we first moved into our house we couldn't get our garden furniture round the back u til we took a car porch down. We had a full dining set and a swing seat in the front for many months. 😂 We have a long garden and drive so quite a way back from the road.
Previous owners had a bistro set in the front garden permanently too.
If you would feel comfortable sitting in the front just do it. I wouldn't give a toss what other people think of it .

I have a round garden dining table and two chairs, with hole in middle of table for Sun umbrella in summer. I also have raised vegetable bed and a small wooden greenhouse. All in my front garden at the top of driveway.

I can’t see why it’s would be a problem. Although non is particularly visible from road due to shape of driveway

Not the done thing? I think it's very usual in old cottagey villages where back gardens are small.

I thinkna bench would be less stealable

SwedishEdith · 11/04/2025 14:40

Loads of people in cutesy terraces near me do this. I think it's nice if you have pleasant neighbours.

Meadowfinch · 11/04/2025 16:21

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast I went for this one, and made a box cushion for cold days

Would you actually sit out there though?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 11/04/2025 17:24

I would! I usually open the front door and sit hanging out of it drinking a cup of tea so I would absolutely plonk my backside down on a chair or bench.

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast , Have you no decorum?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 11/04/2025 18:06

I definitely don’t have decorum no.

I have a wooden bench and a low coffee table arrangement in my front garden. It is mostly concealed by a high hedge but can be seen from the footpath depending on the angle. It’s fab, I love it, I give no fucks as to standards or decorum as when I didn’t have the bench I used to perch on the front step instead. In my dressing gown no less. Sun lasts until midday when I move to the back garden.

Do it.
