Cat flap on a double glazed glass french door - bad idea?

I've just moved into a new build. Previously, I had a catflap in a wooden door, but it was in a utility room, so it was not in view.
Anyway, my new kitchen only has one way out and it's via a glass French door, I had thought about letting her in and out, but we've done this for one day and she's driving me mad, she's in and out all the time, plus I really want to get rid of the litter tray - but I don't know if a flap in a glass door will look horrible, or make the glass unsafe or something.

So, i'm interested to see what everyone's views are.

I did it and think it’s some of the best money I spent. Also they do you a whole new pane so the original is wrapped in the garage for if I ever move or don’t have a cat

I did it, works fine

We did the same thing - unfortunately one of our cats escaped into Sadi garage and pulled at the cloth covering the pane, this causing it to fall and smash 😂
All I would say is, the cat flap (which has been in place for 7 years) is now a bit grubby inside where it’s impossible to clean. Plus, as it sticks out I can’t have a blind at the door.

You can have a cat flap in a window if it helps?

MistyMountainTop · 31/03/2025 23:30

You can also put a catflap through a wall

I presume you can replace the cat flap when it gets dirty though can't you? I don't have a garage so it would have to be a new glass panel if I ever don't need it.

You have to pay for a new pane which has the hole already cut and the edges sealed. You can then replace the flap whenever you like. However it's expensive. Cheaper and easier to put it in a wall.

A cat flap being dirty on the inside is not something I’d concern myself with.

So, I spoke to a window man and he said £330 plus I buy the cat flap.
Is that the going rate?

Surely you can't just make holes in your walls can you? wouldn't it muck up insulation etc?

Ours is through the wall in the utility room. We thought about having it in glass but it would get dirty and drive me mad!

thecatneuterer · 02/04/2025 20:27

The going rate is whatever the cost for a replacement double glazed pane is - and that depends on the size.

It's very easy to put a hole in the wall. If it's a thick wall then they sell plastic tunnel liners for the job. It should cost £50 to £100 for a builder. It's a quick job.

That sounds like a reasonable price. We paid £250 to have one fitted in a slim single pane back door 8 years ago. I recommend SureFlap cat flaps. Their customer service is phenomenal.

I think we paid twice that a few months ago though that did include some travel and the flap as we were slightly outside his area. It did feel expensive but the man was very nice and it’s been great for cat to be able to come and go without us and without opening the door and letting the heat out.
