Decent quality mid century style sofa - where to buy?

Hello - I’m moving house soon and my excellent 4-seater sofa that is still going strong after 10 years is, sadly, going to be too big for the new flat. I HATE sofa buying - it feels like such a lottery, and I can’t afford to get it wrong! Current one was from Sofa Workshop, which is no more. Any recommendations for where to get a decent quality sofa? I like mid century styles, with wooden legs. Have been looking at the Zinc at DFS which gets good reviews but anywhere else please? I’m in Scotland, if that’s helpful. Many thanks.

Good question! Budget is not in the John Lewis G-Plan range, looking for a 3-seater sofa, armchair and footstool and total budget up to around £2k.

I’d spend the money on actual mid century furniture and getting it reupholstered. It’s built to last whereas new stuff isn’t. I have mid century sofas and armchairs and expect to keep them (with recovering where necessary) for the rest of my life. I bought them between ages of 35 and 42.

Ercol?

Agree with Posie. Parker Knoll sofas are comfortable. I also have a very comfortable Alston sofa.

Ercol?

They have a factory shop that’s worth visiting if your vaguely local
https://www.ercol.com/en-gb/our-company/ercol-outlet?srsltid=AfmBOorbtCbx13RxzIS6RSCdT0q3qEhmWaxggLli5x5k7BY15ditOQ5A

they also supply cushions etc for old sofas. So if you find a frame on ebay

I do indeed. I have a different style though, the Jude. Good quality velvet, generous foam seating. Had excellent service from Sofa.com. No I don't work for them.

@Maitri108Great tip! I’m quite tempted to go over to Glasgow to try sitting on one. Thanks.

No problem, they're very comfortable.

Another vote for second hand reupholstered. I got two ercol renaissance sofas for free (see then quite often for £50/100) and I reupholstered then myself but it's not too expensive to get done professionally.

Mine are about 50-60 years old, and great condition apart from needing new cushions soon.

We went for the dfs zinc sofas and they are perfect so far (had them a couple of years). Really comfy and look great. We had a dfs soda before and it lasted a really long time so I’m hopeful these will too.

I’ve got the Zinc! Had them about three years after seeing it in a holiday flat we stayed in. I love it. Nice and deep front to back, very comfy, lots of colours to choose from. I’d buy them again.

John Lewis do a nice MCM style called Arlo. I did go and sit on it and it was quite hard compared to the Zinc and the arms not at all squishy, hardly padded. Looks lovely though!

Have you tried your local auction houses? You can get some great furniture at auction, particularly mid century stuff at an absolute bargain!
