Shutter advice

We want to buy shutters for 2 windows and have them properly installed. We are really not good at DIY.

I'm finding it difficult to get a comparison of prices without actually asking a company for a definite quote. We went into one place today and they wanted to actually visit before giving a price, not even a ball-part figure.

Has anybody recently had shutters? can you advise who is currently offering the best prices/best quality.

I can as I've done nothing but meet shutter companies for the last few weeks.

They all get their shutters from factories in China and they take about three months.

They need to measure your windows as they're made to order. You can get wood and PVC which you want for kitchens and bathrooms.

They're all around the same price. I've got four windows to do and every quote was approximately 2.2-2.4k. That's three wood and one PVC.

They will negotiate price which is what I'm currently doing. I don't know how helpful the companies I've met are as I'm in London.

I wouldn’t have shutters again as they seem to trap condensation mould and dirt behind them. I’m going for Venetian blinds this time. But if you want the insulation and are good at regular cleaning whynotjust get people round to quote? Maybe a big firm like Hillary’s might be able to give you comparison prices, in my experience shutters are a lot more expensive than Venetian blinds

Why won’t you let them visit to give you a quote? There’s no obligation!

We used a small local company who use shutters made in the UK, not China.

Thankyou for the replies.

I'm happy to have a company come and quote, I just don't want to have to take time off work for lots of different companies to come round.

We want shutters for the insulation and the benefits of the tier on tier style.

Thanks @Maitri108 that's really helpful. We just want 2.

I used a local company and had shutters put on one window in the bathroom, it was around £450 in total. Going to get the other bathroom done too once I get some other work done in it first.

We had a big bay window and 2 other windows, so 5 in total (bay counts as 3). It was £1700 and we are really happy with them. They were installed in early 2024 so fairly recent

Hi @mintchocolatecoffee do you mind me asking who you used? I've just started my search. And @Maitri108 do you see much of a difference between the companies you've met, any stand out? Many thanks for your thoughts!

I have a normal bedroom window that has 4 panels and that was £980 and a massive rectangle front bay window with 7 longer than average panels and that was £2,000 I was pleased with that price as I am in London and I thought they would be twice that. This was November 2024. I got 3 Quotes and they were all similar 2 PVC ones from Hilary’s and the other mainstream company - can’t remember the name but there are owned by the same company as Hilary Blinds, and a wooden option from the Wooden shutter Company which was about £300 more. I went with the Wooden Shutter Company.
