Your thoughts on these wardrobes…..

Just in the process of moving into a new house, and found the seller decided to ignore their contract when it came to emptying the property and leave us these huge wardrobes 😂.

We’re not going to make a fuss because it’s pointless, and to be honest, they will be useful short term but I cannot decide whether I like them or not. They are very solid, cream gloss with a sort of marbling - I think they must be 60s or 70s vintage. Huge amount of storage inside. I wish I could work out a date or makers name. I love vintage stuff, but this is not the type I usually go for.

Just out of interest, what do you think?

They look dated, but there’s options if you wanted to keep them for the storage as that’s always helpful!
You could change the doors
Get them wrapped in a vinyl and new door handles
See if they can be sanded down and repainted
Or you could rip them out and get new built in wardrobes instead but that’ll cost a lot more.
I’d probably see if painting or wrapping them would work as a temporary solution and then you can live with them for a little while and see if you like them.

Not to my taste.

if the interiors are in good condition and meet your needs I would replace the doors - they will look like new.

painting might be an option, but I think they will always be a bit blah given the lack of shape.

Brilliant. I love lots of storage and fitted wardrobes cost a fortune. I would repaint and change the handles.

DustyLee123 · 07/03/2025 15:11

Not to my taste, but someone who likes vintage will love them.

You can ask your solicitor to ask the seller to pay you for the cost of a skip to dispose of them. Wether you use the money for that is up to you but skips aren't cheap nowadays so it would probably be £200

Yes they do look dated, but if in good condition you can get firms who respray kitchen cabinets who would probably be able to make them look brilliant

Yes, definitely old. Probably about 50 years at least. Who knows, maybe they will become desirable in the future haha. Painting them could be a possibility at some point, but since we are doing a full reno, they will have to wait a bit.

I have to say -I’m a bit disappointed that nobody has come on the thread to say they are lovely 😂. Anybody???

I might be inclined to say this @Flyingsatsuma but could you post a photo of close up of the doors? It may be a pity to paint or otherwise alter them.

My husband's grandmother had the most amazing wardrobes in her flat in Italy. 60's, wooden, with internal drawers etc. they were dark wood though. We had nowhere to store them when the flat was sold, and they were left there :( Probably chucked by the new owner. I still think about them sometimes, especially as I need to furnish a dressing room, where they would fit!

I had a similar set of wardrobes when I bought my house. They were gloss and while not to my immediate taste were very bloody useful! I got beading and made long rectangular shapes same as wardrobe door but inset IYSWIM. Then I put nice wallpaper in the rectangle and matched with wall paint to complement. Turned out very well and cost buttons to do really. Changed handles aswell.

Istilldontlikeolives · 08/03/2025 12:21

The picture isnt very clear but i would likely keep and change the handles. They seem ok to me.
