Just been quoted £3k for electrics in kitchen refit, any idea if we’re being ripped off?

Refit being done by a company and their fitter who uses his tradespeople who charge separately.Everything so far has been reasonably priced and come with good recommendations. We like the electrician and are converting to induction. So it covers a new fuse box which we really need, getting access to a line via an upstairs floor, repositioning sockets slightly( they are in crap places), ceiling spot lights ( some need to be in new places) LED strip lights. Just seems a bit steep or is that the going price? Not sure what we can do as we want to use this team.

Sounds about right to me. We paid £2k last year for a new fuse box, new light fittings, extra sockets and a few other things.

My electrics in my extension were insanely expensive relative to other trades. No idea why but it seems to be a thing.

Sparkies are expensive, sounds about right,we paid similar.

Distribution boards start around £800 and go up from there depending on the size of the board you need - size of the house etc. they can be over £2k with all the new regs for RCBOs etc repositioning sockets might look easy but is a pain if he has to chase out and make good spotlights too, I'd say Labour cost is around £400 per day so all your little jobs soon add up

Induction hob will need its own supply too which means pulling through additional cables.

We paid £1500 and that didn't include new board. Like you I thought it was huge compared to other trades but I think I'm just out of touch

It sounds in the right ballpark tbh

We paid £2k to replace the consumer unit/fuse box last year during our kitchen refit.

I think electricians are expensive because they are the ones that can kill you if they get it wrong. Them and gas engineers. Both require significant ongoing training in a way that plumbers, joiners, builders etc don't to keep up to date with latest standards.

Cattreesea · 01/03/2025 09:04

I paid about 5K (SE) to rewire an entire house 1 year and a half ago including new sockets, new unit/fuseboard and removing and replacing old lights throughout the house so to me it seems too expensive.

Songbird54321 · 01/03/2025 09:12

We've just paid £100 for one new socket in our kitchen. From what you're describing it's not a small job so probably about right.
You'd likely find it cheaper if you shopped around but not by much and if you like the electrician I'd go with it. Not something I'd be scrimping on.

Forgot to add it’s a utility too both of which are down a corridor from said fuse box( if that makes any difference).🤷‍♀️
