The holy grail of low thread count bedding

Please can anyone point me in the direction of some low thread count pure cotton duvet covers? By low I mean 100 or, ideally, less. Googling only brings up results for 200 or more even when I specify 100, so if you have such bedding where did you find it? I'm looking for plain bedding, preferably white but any pale plain colour would do. I'd also like the moon on a stick.

But why, though?

No self respecting manufacturer is going to boast of low thread count (ie below 200) sheets because that would indicate low quality, thin bedding. They’re more likely to proclaim how budget friendly their products are.

If you want low cost bedding most supermarkets should have some. If you want rougher, less silky bedding a polyester cotton mix, or linen might be better.

Still very curious - are you wanting it for some non-bed covering reason - gardening or bee keeping or … sailing???

I just find most bedding too hot and heavy, looking for something very light and airy. Yes I already have a low tog duvet, sleep with the window open and a fan going so low thread count is the only place I can go from here really. The sheets I'm currently using are 130 and I don't think I'll be able to tolerate them in the summer.

I don't think low thread count equates to cool.....

StrawberryPi · 21/02/2025 14:59

You probably want to look for a light linen or lightweight cotton (but not based on threadcount).

Overtheatlantic · 21/02/2025 15:00

Get ones that advertise as crisp and cool

AutumnLeaving · 21/02/2025 15:12

I understand ☺️
I also much prefer a low thread count, still 100% cotton and nice quality but low thread count is lighter and softer.

I have found the cheap 100% Egyptian cotton on eBay is usually great.

OwlsDance · 21/02/2025 15:26

You can get adult size cellular blankets if you're that hot?

Is it possible that your 130 count also contains polyester or other synthetic threads? Just a guess on my part, but I'm wondering how it's possible to achieve a low thread count without the material being too fragile to be useable. Especially as bedding.

Regardless, I agree with pp - the way to go is better quality cotton, not worse. Just be aware that some sheets advertised as having a high TC do so by having poor quality thread. Often 800 can be a sweet spot.

When night sweats became an issue for me, I converted to high TC bed linen, a low tog wool duvet and use a knitted cotton cot bed blanket as an alternative when I'm really hot.

MsWintertowne · 21/02/2025 16:28

Actual linen would surely be cooler?

Or maybe silk - though I don’t recall ever trying it.

You may also be able to moderate the temperature of your bed with a cooling mattress. Can’t advise as it’s the opposite of what I’d want - but it must be worth investigating?

Have you considered something that's described as sateen finish. The smoother feel might work for you?

Janek · 21/02/2025 17:24

We have some from IKEA that must be that low a thread count. I'm not sure if they still do them, but they were very cheap and basic. We got them for a spare duvet.

NotMeNoNo · 21/02/2025 17:53

Hotel contract supplier?

We've got an American thin quilt / bedspread that is lovely for the summer, bought it from Target on holiday. Possibly a bit like this. After being on holiday in the USA where it was really hot, all the hotel beds were made up just with sheets and these light quilts.

Are these the ones? I've been wondering about them, cheap enough to give them a go.

No, they look quite posh in comparison!!! They were REALLY cheap, but it was a while ago, they might not do that quality any more...

Janek · 21/02/2025 21:02

Actually, I've just zoomed in on the material, they could well be similar. They're quite rough, but not in an unpleasant way.

CarefulN0w · 23/02/2025 15:02

OP I was in M&S earlier and thought of this thread. They had some that were 230 threads.

saveforthat · 23/02/2025 15:05

I have changed from a high thread count to linen. It's so much cooler.

Op, as another has said, replace with linen and you may find it better. Redoute have some lovely stuff - watch out for sale - or H&M did a while I ago I know.

Also, my top tip for getting too hot - swap out your duvet entirely just for the cover only + a thin blanket / nothing at all. In the summer's hottest nights I just have the duvet cover (so two sides of sheet) on top of me. Bliss!!

Re thread count, it isn't always higher is 'better' but it certainly does help with longevity. I'd be really cautious of such a thin count just giving up really quickly personally?
