Panelling yay or nay?

I'm doing a large refurb so all my socials are now swamped with DIY reels, etc.
I feel like every single person is putting panelling (or fake panelling) up everywhere and I can't decided how I feel about it. On the one hand I think it can look nice, and adds a bit of interest to a space/breaks it up a bit. But the other part of me thinks it's just something I'll spend time doing then in a year think it looks utterly crap and have to deal with all the making good after I decide to tear it off the walls.

What do you think? Is it just overdone at this point?

I've got some quite large walls in my house, especially living room and undecided if panelling would be a good option.

Side-line moan for the fact all the people who post these reels seem to complete the task without any kind of area prep (dust sheets, etc), are always wearing normal clothes rather than me and my designated decorating clothes which are caked in paint and caulk, and they always seem to be able to undertake these things with such ease, as though you could just whip up some wall panelling on your stairs in your lunch break.

Depends.

Do you live in a period property or a new build flat?

I am like you. It does look good on certain reels and on Pinterest but its also been around for a little while now so could also be on the way out soon too.

In a period house, love it.

Neither, but that was one of my concerns. It's more of a period property type of style.

I think it can be lovely in any home bar maybe an ultra modern house, but I definitely would never attach with no more nails or whatever they are using as I imagine it'll be a nightmare to get off next time you redecorate.
. Regular nails for sure. (As long as you know where pipes/cables are!)
Was toying with it for my 1920s home and the hall would cost £50 to do so didn't think it was too terrible a price to "risk". But ultimately I think I'll skip it.

So I have used it - the full height boards which look like t&G - mainly on the odd wall where the wall behind it is in poor condition and it's a cheaper fix than hacking off replastering etc. also in high traffic areas/kids room as you gloss/eggshell it and it's a LOT more hard wearing than a painted wall - if you change your mind down the line though as it tends to be glued on there is no way it's coming off without bringing down half the wall

I think some people might have glued it to lining paper that way it is just like stripping off wallpaper. I never follow "trends" I do things in my own home for me/Dh who is very much involved in the decor decision process and if I need the wall plastered after removing something then I will pay out for that.

I have in the past decorated my children's bedrooms with hand painted murals at their request which required sanding the wall smooth when I redecorated to remove the lines of paint. I have the time and energy to do this, other people may not.

I don't care if someone believes that only X furniture can go in a period home or new build. I decorate for me and for now. This is the 5th house I have lived in with Dh and we have been here over a decade. I have completely redecorated houses to sell them and staged them to appear neutral and easy to live with. So basically, do it and if in a year you don't like it anymore take it out. Learn to embrace the change, the boredom of what you chose originally and accept you may change your mind.

No, I wouldn’t.

I just spent the weekend ripping out dado rails in our 90s home and am vehemently against the panelling. I think good quality panelling looks beautiful but beading stuck on to look like panelling, nope, not for me.
