Blinds, shutters, need advice

I'm currently getting quotes on blinds. I want five windows done, three with wood Venetian and two with faux wood.

The salesman said that for some windows which have a draft I would be better off with shutters. The bathroom is freezing.

Now I'm thinking should I just get shutters? Should I get all shutters or shutters for the drafty windows and Venetian blinds for the others?

In my experience shutters don’t really stop draughts (ours were fitted professionally and we have a leaky house in general). Heavy curtains are your best bet for draughts. I wouldn’t get shutters for the bathroom, blinds are much easier as they can be opened easily for a proper airing after a bath or shower.

I imagine that shutters are more expensive than your blinds and that might be the reason for the suggestion!!

We have solid wood Georgian shutters and they are good for drafts so I assume it depends on what type of shutters you get? I wouldn't think the ones with slats would so much for drafts.

I know shutters are more expensive but if you can afford them then I would get them purely because they look much nicer than blinds.

Just to add, pp is right - only heavy curtains stop draughts (unless you get those solid wood shutters which don’t have slats and cover the whole frame.)

I can't have heavy curtains for various logistical reasons. If shutters won't stop the drafts, then I'll get Venetian blinds because shutters are ridiculously expensive.

I would have thought that the frame around the shutter would help exclude drafts. I'm going to have to try draft exclusion stuff instead. I have sash windows and the wind gets in between the gaps. My bathroom is artic.

We have shutters and they do keep draughts out. We love them.

Which kind of shutters do you have? Plantation? Do they let in a lot of light in the bedroom?

Shutters won't blow around and rattle though

We have shutters and Venetians.

I can't comment on draughts cos our windows aren't draughty but they do def keep the cold from the windows back iyswim. When I open them in the morning you can feel the colder air behind and condensations forms.

In rooms where there are Venetians we have none of that and the rooms are noticeably cooler

Does the salesman work on commission?

You can have a look at supply only shutters, Sarah Beeny recommends this company https://shutters.co.uk/ and then compare that to the price of supplied and fitted shutters by whatever company is quoting you.

In the same vein you can also get supply only venetian blinds, mine are from Blinds2Go, instant quote online. Really good quality too. If you aren't comfortable fitting your own you can hire a handyman/person to fit them for you.

I would be addressing why the windows are draughty and seeing if you can fix that issue. There are videos on Youtube which may help you sort that problem out.

@PencilWithASharpPoint

I'm not currently using a company. I had a quote and asked advice regarding drafts and was advised to get shutters. I have looked into it and the consensus seems to be that shutters are the best option.

However they're expensive and I don't know if it's worth the cost. I will also be looking at draft exclusion options. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll look into it.

Wooden shutters with wide slats make a huge difference in my draughty house. What did you go for?
