We are needing to redecorate most of the rooms in our house and we want to move away from the 50 shades of grey that we seem to have. Please can anyone suggest any neutral colours that go with many different coloured soft furnishings, please?

Someone has suggested Rock salt by Dulux. Has anyone got this - is it nice?

People can suggest colours but, to be honest, they could look completely different in your home than theirs. It all depends on the light in the room. Even colours that look the most neutral on the paint chip can take on a cream/yellow look in your room.

I had a colour that looked like a neutral griege in one room and looked a bit lilac in another. I helped a friend trying to find a nice cool neutral colour to use in every room and she ended up buying about ten different samples (because she's very thorough!). We put them all on two different walls in each room and did a ranking system (because she's very thorough) on a bright day and she did it again that evening under artificial light. Only one of the colours passed the test of not being the least bit cream/yellow/other random colour in any light.

Obviously this would be a lot more helpful if I could remember the actual colour but it was years ago. What I'd suggest is get lots of paint charts and look at them in your different rooms under different conditions.

Rock salt is very light, how about a mushroom type colour

We have Dulux Egyptian cotton throughout. It's the perfect neutral greige.

I love Dulux Egyptian Cotton. I haven't tried Rock Salt.

Farrow & Ball Skimming Stone. We got ours colour matched in Johnstones at Decorating Centre Online to save on the cost.

Take a look at Crown Pale Gold ... it's a nice warm neutral, sandy/beige colour. It was the one I chose after trying loads of samples.

Well anything's better than grey but I think all those variations of cream just look cream /magnolia.
Why not go for very pale shades of colour?
DS moved into a completely grey house. He's stuck with the grey carpets for now but has changed the walls to pale pinks, lemon and greens which work surprisingly well.

Little Green Ceviche and Slaked Lime are lovely. They're a sort of greeny grey beige & work well in different lights. Johnstones do a colour match & it's good paint. My partner used to have a paint factor business & recommends the company, PPG who manufacture some of Johnstones paint.

A pale sage green would be fresh and fairly neutral. Like Paint and Paper Library Willow V.

Golden sandstone beiges are good too.Something like Little Green's Bath Stone.

I agree with @Boffle , all those colours look like magnolia. And if your house is currently all grey then presumably all your curtains and carpets and soft furnishings go with grey and so won't go with a warm cream. What's your favourite colour and would a very light version of that work?

Or if being fashionable is important go for a beige or brown.

We have Egyptian cotton everywhere. Isn't cream, isn't grey, it's mostly greige depending on the light, but definately nowhere near magnolia.

Fundays12 · 25/01/2025 16:54

Egyptian cotton by Dulux might work but it can look different shades depending on your carpet and light

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'm heading to the DIY shop next weekend so I will check out these colours.
