New mattress cost?

Just wondering what you think is a reasonable budget for a new super king mattress? I’m getting really overwhelmed by all options, prices ranging from a few hundred to a few grand, and people generally agreeing that “you need to spend as much as you can afford” which is mega vague!

Pur old mattress is king size Emma and at 5 years old has a huge dip in my husband’s side that’s causing him back pain, and my side isn’t much better. So we now want one that will last! Apparently my in-law’s mattress is like 20 years old and still great so I’m led to believe such longevity is possible, but doesn’t come cheap.

We have a 0% credit card for £4.5k but I wanted to go on holiday this year too so ideally wouldn’t spend it all on a mattress. Is £2k enough to get a quality super king? Which brands/manufacturers should I look at?

When we finally get round to buying a new mattress (we also have an Emma which has dipped either side) im planning on getting a Premier Inn Mattress. Just looked there and super king is just under £1000

I dont think mattresses last 20 years. I think 5-8 is pretty standard. Also, think about the sweat etc that accumulates over that time!!
We recently bought a super king mattress from Dreams. It cost about £1500.

We used to buy expensive mattresses but a few years ago the whole household moved over to Ikea sprung mattresses. They are so comfy and around three hundred pounds. I'm now convinced that I have been lied to all these years about the need to spend lots of money on one!

We got a fantastic superking zip and link from Warren Evans for about £1000. We're really pleased with it. I would recommend looking at them as an option. We got a frame from them too.

Instead of one super king sized mattress, we got 2 single ones, it worked out so much cheaper and we don’t have the sag in the middle. We only spent £250 on each and they’ve lasted 5 years and we are going to replace them this year. We have the traditional spring mattresses but I wouldn’t mind getting a spring mattress with different top, but certainly won’t be spending a fortune on them,

Just be careful about the Premier Inn mattresses. They are not the same ones as used in the hotels - I sent ours back after a week as it was so awful (massive dip on one side, felt cheaply made). It was a big disappointment as I love the ones in the hotels!

I prefer a pocket spring mattress over alternatives and would always check the quality of the filling materials. And buy it in an actual shop, not online, so you can try them out.

I paid £2500 for a king from John Lewis. It's at least 10 years old and as good as new. But I expect you could find decent quality for around £1500?

But also look at having 2 singles vs one super king. Is it a question of space or do you and your partner have different sleeping habits? If the latter, I'd opt for singles that can be zipped together.

Thanks everyone. Interesting that maybe a cheaper mattress could be good enough!

Two singles that zip might be something to do when we need to update again but we currently have our toddler in our bed and I don’t think it would be too comfy for him to be in the seam of two mattresses. We’re planning on getting two single duvets though.

If you get a zip and link you would never notice it's there.

We have a lovely thick wool mattress topper from Devon Duvets on top of our Warren Evans superking zip and link. As well as being really comfy it also protects the mattress. It cost about £200, but was definitely worth it.

It pretty much feels like one big mattress, you would never know there were 2 parts and I'm sure DH or I sleep in the middle sometimes.

Ah really!! That's so disappointing. Thanks for the heads up!

I can't rate ikea mattresses highly enough. I went for the dearer one when I moved think it was £500
It's the vagstranda one and the comfiest mattress I've ever had.

WhenTheyComeForYou · 25/01/2025 08:22

Our deep Silentnight mattress is 12 years old and still on top form. I’ve rarely turned it too. It was around £500 I think at the time and is by far one of the comfort mattresses I’ve slept on. But I would definitely recommend trying one out in person, we’re in the market for a super king soon and I’ll be going to benson for beds and dreams. I want another deep pocket sprung one.

We went to a bed shop today and left even more confused! 😂there were some nice ones for sure, now we're trying to decide just how high we can go. Harrison Spinks were lovely, but were they so much better than any of the others to justify the cost? We'll have to go back without our toddler another day.

Shame we're nowhere near London as I'd definitely would go and see what Warren Evans has.

Warren Evans have a really good returns policy. After a trial period if you don't like it they will collect it, give it to charity and refund you fully.

We ordered our Warren Evans bed and mattress without going to the showroom after reading loads of reviews and doing a huge amount of research. It seemed to offer the best quality for the price out of everything we looked at and we haven't been disappointed at all. I think we paid about £2200 for the superking bed frame and zip and link mattress. The staff were also really helpful.

We ended up getting a Somnus in the end. We had it narrowed down to a seasonal turn Harrison and a turn-free Harrison. The seasonal turn was a bit too firm and the turn free a little squidgy. I’m much smaller than my husband so the softer one was still comfy for me but not OH and the firm was the opposite. Then the sales person suggested we try a Somnus, where we hadn’t even looked due to the prohibitive cost, but that one model was only £100 more than the Harrisons, and with 20% discount only £80 more in the end (the king size display mattress is being cleared so would be 50% off if anyone is West Midlands way and looking for a bargain!) It ended up being pretty perfectly in the middle and comfy for us both!

Im so excited to sleep on a supportive mattress again, and for the extra space!
