Can I do two rooms completely different styles

I'm really struggling with home decor, I've just moved into a rental, the kitchen is black and white so I've added silver/steel looks very modern, my lounge is white (can't paint) and a dark brown sofa, dark hardwood floors so I'm thinking to go beige/neutrals and gold. Can I do this or will it look too odd being completely different to the kitchen which is only the next room away. Any ideas also welcome

I know proper designers do think of the design flowing through the house but for me living there day in and out, I’d rather have two rooms that look put together in their own right.

I think beige/neutrals will be lovely with the dark flooring. Do you ever look at H&M’s home section? They’ve usually got loads of neutral stuff etc and some of it’s really well priced.

It’s your home, you can do whatever you like! Maybe consider branching out into some colour rather than all monochrome and neutral. The way I tend to pick a colour scheme is to start with a patterned cushion or a painting and pick out colours from that for curtains, blankets and rugs etc

Yes I was considering this however I really wouldn't know what colour to go for, none seem to stand out to me

Maybe go to TK Maxx or Home Sense and look at their small rugs and throws. I got a lovely rug in there before Christmas for about £12.

Once you find something that appeals, then the colours in that can guide you to cushions, pictures etc. B&M is good for cheap furnishings too.

inthink it helps when there is flow, and that means things look harmonious when moved from room to room- table cloth in kitchen can be put on dining table in living room, plates and mugs etc look good in both spaces, a chair can be pulled from one room to another without a huge clash in styles. etc etc

but we also live in real life and if the decor that already exists doesn’t lend itself to that then you can’t force it .
