Does anyone have those shallow IKEA wardrobes?

The 38/43cm ones? What do you think? Are they practical? Do they drive you mad? Do you feel like you made a mistake? Or are you happy with them?

Our bedroom is very small and we've been using the box room as a walk in wardrobe for the last couple of years, however, baby#2 will be arriving soon and we're trying to finish up the bits and bobs of decorating that we've been putting off for ages.

One of those jobs is installing proper storage.

If we do the shallow wardrobes we will have space to walk around the bed on both sides although it'll be a squeeze.

If we get regular sized wardrobes (60cm) then the space around the bed will be too narrow and we'd be better off shoving the bed against the window wall and losing side access on one side.

Honestly not thrilled about either option and interest rates mean we're not moving house any time soon.

We're very aware that life with 2 children will be carnage so trying to do some of the heavy work while we have one at nursery. No one will be moving into the box room for another couple of years probably but it would be nice to get this done anyway.

In terms of hanging, DP has a few shirts and I've got some suits and dresses but otherwise we have a lot of jumpers, t-shirts etc which can just be folded up.

You mean where stuff hangs one in front of the other, rather than alongside... ? (I feel like there's a simpler way to explain that sorry!!) We have these and they're absolutely fine, never bothered us. It was all we could fit too. Can't think of any reason why they would be annoying.🤷🏼‍♀️

Yes those ones! Sorry they seem to have a bunch of different names online and I didn't want to cause confusion by implying I was after a specific model rather than the concept in general.

In our previous flats we've only ever had the regular wardrobes so I suppose it's fear of the unknown and worry about making a costly mistake!

I have them and they are great. I don't have a huge amount of stuff that needs to be hung up, so most of my clothes are folded on the shelves and I have the pull out baskets for underwear etc. The rail pulls out so it's easier to hang things up. I got the extra tall version (if IKEA still offers that option) so I could maximise the storage space available.

I also have one and it’s absolutely fine. We bought a 100 cm wide Pax years ago with wire drawers and those hangers. Hangers fine, drawers jam easily because of width. Very handy to have a shallow wardrobe imo.

They offer substantial storage for a small footprint. Everything is easy to access as it's all in the 'front' as there is no space 'behind'. Hangers will be sideways to normal - you need to get used to that bit. The most annoying feature was the sliding doors. Never again! Can't slide out the wire baskets until both doors are fully to one side. I found it difficult! Also hated the wire baskets as things got caught / peeked through the wires. If you can get them without the baskets I think they are excellent!

If anyone could post links to those, the wardrobes-where-stuff-hangs-one-in-front-of-the-other-rather-than-alongside (perfect description) I’d be very grateful. The Ikea website does my nut in, I can never find what I’m looking for on there! These sound like just the thing I’m after.

Yes my son has a triple 2 x hanging and 1 x shelves (they fit the boxes that fit in Kallax) in his loft conversion bedroom He does have a built in too but these work great in he limited space available .

Thanks also @happy2025 for doing my work for me

happy2025 · 20/01/2025 19:45

It's called the PAX / AULI range - you can search with this. 👍🏻

Blue278 · 20/01/2025 19:49

Yes we had a wide pair of those shallow pax. Agree with PP. the wire drawers are a bit annoying and the sliding doors are so heavy and come off the rails sometimes. But they’re tidy.
We had a narrow Billy next to it with baskets for extra storage. Get the extra height for both and there’s loads of storage.
