Colour drenching

I like the idea of colour drenching in my hall. I have expensive grey laminate doors that I don’t want to paint. Would get the effect of colour drenching if I leave the doors as they are but pain everything else (walls, stair spindles, skirting, coving and ceiling) in a pale grey? I was going to pain the bannister rail in a much darker grey. Would this work?

Sounds lovely 😊

I've seen loads like that on various sites, it looks great

No chance I could steer you towards a complementary colour rather than more grey? I've seen this gorgeous colour which wood look great with grey

*would

I wouldn't drench anything with grey.

Ollybob · 20/01/2025 07:12

I was hoping this would be a wonderfully colourful idea aka colour drenching but not sure grey cuts it, sorry

another saying yes it can look lovely but don't do grey. Unless your space is south facing and you are picking a very warm grey it will look like a prison cell.

If your doors are grey already then try a warm sage green (make sure it is one with some warmth otherwise it could also look cold)

I like the idea of colour drenching with a complementary colour. So for example shades of dusty pink like Little Greene's China Clay which comes in mid, deep and light (I think). Would look good with grey and there's some variation which could look lovely? Just a thought

12purplepencils · 20/01/2025 07:18

it sounds dated to me and that it would be a nightmare to change in future

BabysittersClub · 20/01/2025 07:30

I also wouldn't do this with grey.

Yes a dusky pink would work well

I've colour drenched including the doors frame but kept the doors as plain wood, it works well. The doors are original to the house so I thought I'd see if I could get away without painting them rather than curse myself in 10 years time when I suddenly decide wooden doors are better. They're a mid toned wood and my paint is very dark.

I think that you’re all right about grey paint. It would look awful. And I do like the idea of a green.

I wouldn't paint everything else grey but would look at colour wheels and choose a suitable other colour that tones. Grey is dated and dull (I do have grey walls in my living room but have lilac, cream, brown and light green accessories/furnishings).

My place is colour drenched with bedroom in Little Green Theatre Red and my spare Room in Little Green Puck. Oh they so work!

GuestSpeakers · 21/01/2025 23:45

Oh my house soul mate! I colour drenched my living room in Puck and while it's not quite theatre red, my hallway and stairs are baked cherry. We're definitely on the extreme side of colour, more than most people would be comfortable with.

Remotemouse · 22/01/2025 08:27

I just painted my hall in Adventurer for the doors and stairs and Hellebore for the walls, ceiling in Just Peachy - it's certainly not subtle.😂If I wanted to keep the doors grey I would colour-match the grey and paint the door surround in the same shade. And choose one colour to go elsewhere.

My hallway, stairs and landing are colour drenched in a sort of slate blue with a blue and charcoal striped stair carpet and I have kept all the pale wood doors.
I like the way it looks (and it was a lot easier to paint the very high ceiling without having to worry about edges)
If I had grey doors and wanted to keep them I would go for something like a pale dusty pink, or pale slate blue, painting all the architraves, etc.

My dining room is Puck !
Such a rich colour

JaninaDuszejko · 25/01/2025 16:46

@Mxflamingnoravera your bedroom is stunning.

Mxflamingnoravera · 25/01/2025 17:12

@JaninaDuszejko Thanks, I cannot take credit for it, it was like that when I moved in. I've dressed it differently but the colour drench is the same, I've kept it because I love it.
