Kitchen worktop overlays

I’m planning on updating the old fashioned worktops in my kitchen. I like the idea of the worktop overlays. I see the adverts on Facebook where they just place the overlay over the current worktop. It looks so simple but nothing usually is. Has anyone had this done in their kitchen? Any comments would help. T I A.

Do you mean the sticky vinyl?
I've done mine recently for the second time, my worktops are an 80's cream marble effect & I wanted a wood effect.
I bought a roll of sticky vinyl from ebay & watched a YouTube video on how to do it. It's quite tricky around the sink area to cut as one piece, this time I did it in 2 pieces (buy more than you need for errors).
It's hard to align, I kept having to peel it back up and re-adjust, you need a cloth or tool with a rubber edge to smooth out the creases and bubbles, you can prick bubbles with a pin.
I also ran some clear silicone around the sink and back of worktop to repel water.
It is prone to scratches from utensils, hot pans and chemicals (some spilt nail polish remover brought the pattern straight off).
It looks good when done and is a cheap alternative to new worktops.

I have a quartz overlay on my bathroom vanity unit. They came out and measured up and took templates for the sinks and tap holes. It’s then a thin sheet of quartz with a lip It literally slots over the top of the existing surface. It’s much cheaper than a solid slab and more environmentally friendly. You would never know to look at it that it isn’t solid

Thanks Ciri. This is what I think I want. Did they have to take the sink and hob out before placing the overlay down then replace them? I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible.

Mine was in the bathroom but yes they would do otherwise there would be a lip of a couple of cm.
