Alstons sofas

Does anyone have an Alstons brand sofa? If so are they worth the money?

My current sofa was an extra display from Next and after 6 years of being treated like a trampoline by dd it is ready for replacement.

Whilst I don't want tonsoend £1000+ on a sofa, we have been all over looking at what is around and cannot find anything we kike/find comfortable other than an Alstons Poppy sofa.

We were away with my dh's family last year and the house we rented had one and it was lovely. Very comfortable, very supportive (I have back issues), Suits both dh and I. He is tall so needs a higher back. I am short so need a shorter seat or I feel like I am a sat in one of those HUGE novelty seaside deckchairs.

We have looked in local big brand shops like DFS, SCS etc. Only one w egound that we liked was a similar price to the Poppy. However, I didn't really like the fabric options. They had a couple that would have been "ok" but I didn't love of that makes sense.

If I am spending that sort of money I want to love it.

Has anyone got one, are they a good sofa? Are they still comfy after a couple of years etc?

Thanks

Yes, we do. We have had ours for eight and a half years. Still looks like new and very comfortable. Unfortunately, they don't make the style we have anymore, or I would buy another exactly the same.

@Bitteralmond ohh that is good to know. There is an independent furniture shop in a local city thatbhas them in stock to look at so off there next week to have a proper look and check out the fabric options.

I would never buy a Next kne again though!

Ours is SCS branded but was made by Alstons. There was a point where they supplied SCS with some designs but I'm not sure if that's the case anymore. We've got one that's 13 years old and they had just enough fabric of the same type left to make us another one five years later. They've been brilliant. I think it's the cold pressed foam in the seats that makes the difference.

Thanks @Ramblingaway.

I have sat on that many sofas over the last few months 🤣🤣. I really struggle with getting up out of them when the cushions are too soft. Even the "firm" foam filled ones are ridiculously soft

We retired our Alstons couch after 18 years service as the frame went in a back corner of the seat. Well worth it! My mum still has the 2 seater from the set in her living room and it's wearing well, arms are a bit flat now but still sturdy and comfy. Get the hi density cushions for a firmer / supportive seat

@Bitteralmond I was sobbing when they had discontinued the range we had 😢

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 04/01/2025 21:54

@mrsmacmc thank you!

I have one and also used to sell them. Alstons is a good reliable make.

Bitteralmond · 04/01/2025 21:55

@mrsmacmc Ours is 'Loire'. Which one did you have? Why do companies discontinue great designs?!

Dahliasrule · 04/01/2025 21:56

We’ve had our Alston sofa for about 8 years. Standing up well to wear and very comfortable.

Yeah I have an Alstons 4 and 2 seater, almost 10 years old. I'm almost willing it to break because I want a new one but it's very well made and still looks like new despite abuse from 2 kids and a cat!

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 05/01/2025 21:28

@meganna thank-you!

i am still debating between forking out to repair the existing next sofa, but its likely to be about £400 quid by the time i have done that and had it cleaned, but thatbstikk wint solve the fact it is killing my back! I kinda feel whilst sales are on and it is a good process it would be worth investing. Especially as dd is now 11 and hopefully less likely to use the sofa as a trampoline. (She has a huge one in the garden). Although her dance tricks might see her use it as a crashmat I suppose!

We have Alstons. Fab quality. They guarantee the cushions for 10 years and frame and springs for 15. A local furniture company told me you can’t beat them.

Timeforabitofpeace · 26/08/2025 12:01

I do actually. It’s very good. There was a good choice of colours and it’s firm enough but comfortable to sit on, which was what I was looking for.
