1908 house fireplace advice

We are in the process of restoring our Edwardian house and I was hoping someone could advise on this fireplace.

The insert is original as I have done lots of research but I am assuming the surround isn't.

What could this fireplace have looked like originally? I want to get rid of it and replace with something from the era.

I have checked neighbours and even Zoopla and it seems so many have been ripped out so I have nothing to go on.

I am assuming the surround isn't original as it looks like something from Wickes. Even one of the mouldings is coming away and stuck on with glue.

The hearth is also not original, once I take up the tongue and groove floor and expose the floorboards I hope to find the original hearth.

My OH thinks it was just a metal surround matching the insert but I thought they would have a surround made from oak or something.

Thanks

I agree that a cast iron surround would work, or a slate one maybe although they tend to be more Victorian than Edwardian. What about a tall wooden one with a mirror within the mantle? Is that what you meant when you mention oak mantle?

I don't think the surround you have is original to your house, although I could be wrong. It's definitely up the right period but usually art Nouveau fireplaces are in houses where there are other art nouveau features like fancy door knobs or stained glass. At the very least it has been removed and refitted. Are there any other fireplaces still in the house? There would have been one in every room.

Thank you. There are fireplaces upstairs with smaller wooden surrounds with some ornate detailing.

I have seen ones with mirrors on top so I was considering that as an option.

My house is 1920 and has Edwardian features, like the fireplace. It's made of a cast metal material, still useable. I've got fireplaces in every room. I like them, adds character.

It looks as if it could be a whole fireplace- just the mantel that is missing. These images certainly suggest so.
