Can't decide on the colour of new kitchen

Hi all, first time posting on this thread 😄

I'm torn on what colour to go for in my kitchen and it's holding me back from getting it ordered and moving along with the project.

My house is old so it's got high ceilings, my kitchen units run along two walls and I have a small island.

The layout will remain the same (although the configuration of drawers and doors will change a bit).

So far I've decided:

  • it'll be a shaker kitchen
  • I'll use a white marble effect compact laminate
  • I'll go for herringbone in an oak colour on the floor.

Originally I wanted to go for dark green units, however the issues include:

  • most kitchen companies only offer dark green in their more premium / pricey painted ranges
  • samples I've received look a bit turquoise in certain light in my kitchen

Colours I've considered so far
The kitchen walls will be painted an off white.

  • charcoal units
  • navy units
  • mid olive green units.

If it was options one or two (or I found a suitable dark green) I'd likely pair this with some yellow in the room. If the latter option probably some pops of red.

Any thoughts / advice welcome ☺️

Note: pictured are two greens against the light that makes them look a bit more blue, the dark green against an existing cabinet, and the charcoal.

I like the mid olive green

Baxterbaxter · 11/12/2024 10:37

Another one for olive green - it looks calming and inoffensive

Ilovemyshed · 11/12/2024 10:39

Honestly go for something classic and that neutral that won't go out of fashion. Its easy to redecorate, re-tile and change flooring and handles to change a look so long as the basic is timeless.

Offcom · 11/12/2024 11:04

How exciting! Of the samples you've posted, I prefer the charcoal. But I love the sound of navy. And gold for handles/rails etc?

Viviennemary · 11/12/2024 11:08

I think the navy blue although nice will get dated after a year or two. I like the greeny grey colour mussel as its quite neutral . If I ever get round to having a new kitchen I will probably choose that. I agree with folk who say go for a neutral colour, not dark.

SerenityNowInsanityLater · 11/12/2024 11:13

Mid-olive. Lovely. Fresh. Light. Classic. Especially with your white subway tiles.

I love dark kitchen cabinets but it can go wrong really easily. My one neighbour had midnight (darker than navy) cabinets and marble worktops, kind of chalk coloured walls (similar to 'rock salt' paint by Dulux) and it looked magnificent because the kitchen was big (I say 'was' because she's since moved). My other neighbour has a similar kitchen (my neighbour who has moved helped her design it!). It was almost a mini replica of my neighbour's beautiful kitchen but because it's a very small kitchen, the dark cabinets are very overwhelming. You feel a bit crowded out and closed in on. The smaller space gives the same colours a totally different effect.

Pollydollydoodle · 11/12/2024 11:19

Why not go for a more neutral colour of unit and paint your walls the green shade. Coloured units may date very quickly as it's often a trend colour

Scottishboi · 11/12/2024 11:59

Thanks all, I think what you're saying makes sense. In my head a dark green could still be timeless but I suppose it's probably more of an on trend colour just now... I do really like the mid olive green too though and I suppose that's a bit more neutral/timeless hopefully?

Get what you love in your home. The white worktops and herringbone flooring is already nearing the end of a that trend but if it’s not a trend driven purchase then go for what will make your heart sing.

CookieMonster28 · 12/12/2024 08:44

I like the charcoal

Think the others will date more quickly

Slidingdowntherainbow · 14/12/2024 12:08

I’d go for dark green. It’s classy and neutral because of the tone.

I personally wouldn’t go for the mid olive, it reminds me of the sage green everyone was obsessed with a few years ago and it’s dated I think and very ‘cottagy’ rather than classic.

MinistryofMom · 14/12/2024 12:13

We have the dark green shaker units from Howdens - I regret nothing. No turquoise shades that I've noticed.
It's matched with white quartz tops, pink walls & gold accents.

My kitchen makes me feel happy each time I walk in & I spend a lot of time in there.

Chose something you love.

Pleasehelpmedress · 17/12/2024 18:28

I am not a fan of that mid green, I agree with @Slidingdowntherainbow that it's very similar to the sage green so many people have.

I think as long as it's not offensive, I wouldn't think any of those colours would cause issues in the future. Think if all those red feature walls you still see in kitchens. Like others, go with what you love. I am just in the process of installing a very dark green kitchen - it was tricky to find the colour (I didn't go with them in the end, but Naked Kitchens have some nice shades) and I was nervous it would appear too dark with not much natural light in this room. But actually with pale grey tiles and a pale grey laminate worktop, was cupboards in oak, I think it's gorgeous and so happy with it.

I spend so much time in the kitchen I wanted to do what I liked. If it's really an issue in the future doors can get sprayed another colour to freshen them up anyway.

Scottishboi · 18/12/2024 20:30

@Pleasehelpmedress that's interesting to hear! Which dark green did you go for / company in the end? I do think the original plan was dark green and it is what I like so I might just go for it 😄

wafflesmgee · 18/12/2024 20:34

I like the dark green best, followed by the olive.
If olive I'd accessorize with orange to emphasise a mid century vibe.

I least like the dark grey, yawn, because grey reminds me of rainy days and prisons
Navy will go out of fashion soon, so only choose if you love it. I find blue and white a bit "coastal" or preppy somehow. Nothing wrong with that but it's just not me.

Scottishboi · 18/12/2024 21:21

I agree @wafflesmgee about the navy - I think it's nice but it's been very popular for a while now. Green is more of my colour than blue anyway tbh. Funnily enough featuring some yellow or orange in the kitchen was my plan :)

Still a work in progress (at the time of the pic) but love, love, love my dark blue.
