Can I have shutters with a bay window (deep windowsill type)

Exactly this. I have a deep windowsill with a bay window, 4 panes in all. I'd like shutters, but would I have to keep the windowsill completely clear to fold them in and out, or is there a way shutters could run on rails or something?

ATM its the main "surface" in the room so is well used.

We have shutters (pic is one side of our bay). They open down the middle but we never fold them in and out. In fact, there is nowhere for them to sit neatly while open, they are only designed to be opened for occasional access and cleaning.

Ah, that might answer it for me then. I was hoping to open them often to let in as much light as we can- we currently have venetian blinds and it can be dark even with them open.

Thank you, thats really helpful.

We have shutters in a similar bay window- although not a deep windowsill. I think we fold them out about once a year!

I’d say that plantation shutters with the slats fully open will let in much more light than a Venetian blind fully open.

But with a blind you do have the option of course to raise it completely.

We have our shutters for privacy as much as anything (shallow front garden and street with lots of people walking past) so keeping them hinged closed makes sense for us.

As a pp says these shutters are usually kept shut except for cleaning. You open the slats to let light in. Bigger slats = bigger gaps for light.

You could just have half height shutters if you want privacy but not lose so much light? That’s what we have for the same reason.

I have shutters that are cafe style so you can open the top half for extra light. This would mean you can use the windowsill.

However, like other posters I hardly ever open them.
