large South facing living room with lots of natural light by day.
floors are mahogany as is the fireplace. Beige cream textured couch. Tall ceilings so from the picture rail up and the ceiling will be white or complimentary white.
I like F&B Railings/Downpipe or similar.

Is this too dark? Walls currently being plasterboarded so the world is our lobster for colour.

I've just decorated a bedroom in black, with white ceiling, picture rail and doorframe. It's lovely but personally I'd find it too much in a sitting room.

It can work if done properly with the right decor ect to pull it all together. We had our living room black for awhile. Definitely go for a more complimentary white than a white white.
Pintrest is a great place to look at for some inspo.

I had a huge drawing room in F&B Off Black with all woodwork in White Tie. Looked fab.

I would think a warmer dark colour like a deep green or burgundy or a warm dark blue would be nicer, black feels very severe to me.

Be careful - in a S facing room Downpipe will look very grey, not nearly black. Railings will look dark blue-grey.

If you want very dark I would look at brown-black colours to go with the warm mahogany and cream sofa. Grey based colours won’t go.

Downpipe is very circa 2010

I had F&B Off Black for about a year. No blue undertones. It was lovely but I could do it long term

Note that with all dark painted rooms you really need a lot of white/light: light rug, mirror, pictures on the walls with glass to reflect light, white painted woodwork, fireplace etc.

I’m sot sure it would work in a south facing room. Too much warm light.

Burgundy or very dark green would be less stark.

Check out the farrow and ball group on FB. Lots of people paint walls in black and there's some fab inspiration / ideas there x

Thank you all. Mallard Green from the Dulux Heritage or the Aubergine colour from it are also in the running.
We have a north facing living room in French Grey and it’s lovely and warm, and another room stiff key blue. I do love dark and rich colours but there are some excellent suggestions here.
Interesting about the grey undertone not working. All my rooms (bar stiff key blue room) are in grey shades (pink/white/beige/green), off black might be an option. Realistically it will be spring before we can paint anyway so I’ve time to play with texture and tone.
