F&B eggshell nightmare

So I’ve done an ikea PAX hack in my daughter’s bedroom with 6 floor to ceiling ikea laminate doors. Taking me months. Followed some online tutorials for painting the doors but they are chipping and scratching already. They have been hung for a week and when DD opens the doors occasionally they scrape or bash the inside of the doors.

to paint them I sanded them down, 2 coats of Zinnser BIN primer and 3 coats of F&B estate eggshell. I left 24 hours in between each coat and left them for a couple more days before hanging them. They didn’t feel tacky when we hung them but ever so slightly soft and so we used soft cloths to hold them just to protect them. I had thought they would be well on the way to being fully cured but it seems not and I’m so annoyed - they took weeks to paint as I could only do two at a time and with 24 hours between coats it feel like I’ve been doing this for a lifetime and the thought of having to start over is so depressing. I’ve since read that F&B insist on their own primer but no one in the shop mentioned this to me when I checked out with a tin of BIN and a tin of the eggshell.

anyone encountered this and will it cure eventually?

thanks

That sounds so frustrating after all your hard work.

I spent yesterday researching F&B paints and have decided not to use them because you have to have their own primer/undercoat and it's different for different top coat colours - too expensive as I have a whole house to do.

I also found out that estate eggshell isn't as hardwearing as modern eggshell - sorry!

It might get tougher with time, but I have to say that in my experience painting any type of plastic finished surface has never been successful.

You can buy something called cupboard paint that might be more hardwearing.

You need modern eggshell. I have used this loads of times both with and without F&B primer and it hasn't chipped.

I went for estate because I didn’t want the sheen. It’s so annoying! I’m hoping it will cure over time? Has anyone else used Estate and had success?

How you the only thing worth buying is oil based eggshell in a F&B copy. Water based is crap and peel / chips. Total waste of money.

I've used F&B estate eggshell on wood following a Zinnser Bin coat and it's fine. On one occasion it wasn't - did all the same things but the paint curdled - had to sand and scrape all of it off - took ages and I primed with F&B - it didn't curdle but it did take 2 weeks to set to the point where it wasn't tacky. I googled and discovered that quite a few others - even professionals had a similar experience and F&B will never admit there paint was off. I won't use F&B anymore - the emulsion doesn't cover well - requires too many coats and that experience with curdled paint was just too annoying. Nice colours, but shit paint.

I used estate egg shell on my kitchen cupboards. It chipped and scratched within weeks and now looks really scruffy.
I just don't think it's very good to be honest!
Used Little greene eggshell in my sons room and it's been better but doesn't get as much traffic

cherrymarmalade · 19/11/2024 11:44

You needed to use the modern emulsion I’m afraid!

We used Zinsser colour matched to F&B. It's just the best stuff I have ever used.

Well, we started filling drawers in the wardrobes today. DD rushed in and opened a drawer and doors weren’t fully open, massive scrape on inside already. I spent literally months on this, I cannot face sanding them back down and starting again. Not to mention space - now that the new carpet is down there is nowhere for me to do the painting, they are enormous doors!

thanks for the tips - next time I’ll think twice! Have always used little Greene eggshell with no issue whatsoever
