What colour to paint teen bedrooms

Dd 14 and Ds 12. Can finally afford to get their bedrooms redone. We’re a Victoria terrace and rooms are quite small particularly ds’s which had a chunk taken out (was before us) to fit a bathroom. Both have single beds and a desk and shelves and a bit of extra space, so bigger than a box room, but quite small rooms. They each have a sash window but aren’t the lightest of rooms.

Anyhow I have no sense of how colours look on a wall so any unidentifying pics of your teens rooms or suggestions for colours v helpful please. They each currently have one blue sparkly wall and the other three are white - but each has ten years of grime and blu tac marks etc.

I want this to last for several years but also to allow them to have a calming space that reflects them. And I don’t want to get too restrictive about what they can and can’t have on wall

When they were teenagers they decided the colour themselves.

Zonder · 16/11/2024 08:49

Ask them. If necessary you could give a wide choice that doesn't include black or scarlet.

As per PP, I'd expect teenagers to have their own opinion.

I have Dulux willow tree in my spare room. I think it's a very versatile colour, as it can goes well with many other colours (for accessorising).

Personally don’t think white or cream lasts long for teenagers without being grubby. If they are slightly dark anyway usual advice from those in the know is not to fight it. I’d do a mid blue or green up to the picture rail and an off white above. If you go on farrow and ball website they talk about which direction room faces then give suggestions. You can then go to Homebase or b and q as one of them does colour matching with cheaper paint. Have a bit of contrasting colours with rug, bedding, lamp etc. once you’ve chosen some possible colours you can search online or Instagram for examples of bedrooms painted in that colour to see what they look like.

Enjoy I’m sure they’ll look amazing.

My teen DD2 chose Dulux Morning Light on the walls and F&B Teresa's Green on the chimney breast. Same sort of smallish dark room at back of Victorian terrace. The colours are grown up, relaxing and now completely covered in band posters🤩 She chose lots of plants too.

WWGD · 16/11/2024 09:07

Oh yes I wasn’t clear. They can choose. But I will steer…
Both room face south but DD’s is on top of the lounge so one side outside is next door’s house whereas ds’s is on top of kitchen and the other side of house so has no buildings blocking his light if that makes sense (Victorian terrace with open side return on DD’s side)

Ask them what colour scheme or theme today and post back what they say and MN can come up with ideas that you can consider?

drippingtapp · 16/11/2024 12:14

I left them to it at that age - they steered me, not the other way round. Have you asked them?

One of mine did black walls and red paintwork for a couple of years - it looked awful imo but they loved it. The other has always been a fan of spots so did some stencil work on white walls with lots of colour.

DD chose Valspar salty peat for her room, I thought it was going to be too dark but actually it's very cosy with all oak furniture and wood and black metal shelves it works well.

WWGD · 18/11/2024 01:43

Good for you @drippingtapp

will check out salty peat

Son's room is black and red. He chose it himself and it was up to him. It looks really good.

Denim Drift for one.

Just choosing the other one, he wants a blend of ochre to echo a sunset on one wall, and charcoal on the others. Anime theme with neon lights and gaming set up.

Sounds like it works for both of you. My DS is leaving home in March so I'd prefer something less dramatic personally that other people can live with 😊

AlmostCutMyHairToday · 18/11/2024 07:58

For my DS's very small room we painted a horizontal colour block part way up the wall (similar to the pic), which really helped make the room feel bigger and also looks fun.

White.

Really easy to touch up, cover marks

Easy to refresh with a different colour combination of soft furnishings.
