Posted on here a few weeks back for advice.
I'm really stressing out now as measurements are tight!(my adhd and ocd aren't helping!)

Son in need of his bedroom updating and a new bed. He is currently in a toddler with plastic boxes under for storage. I was thinking of an ottoman bed to make full use of bed space underneath. Problem with bed is that I want white wooden, size shorty as hardly any space in room. But I can't find anything! Bed will go under the radiator to make most of the space.

I'm struggling with other storage in the room. I'm thinking of an ikea platsa, pic attached. Currently has a wardrobe with plastic drawers in the bottom for toys and also a chest of three drawers. Hopefully the chest of drawers and wardrobe would all condense into the Platsa. But he still needs more storage for toys as hardly any space downstairs. Argos version of four square kallax in his room also and three shelves on the wall for his books.

Asked for husbands advice and he got fed up after 10 mins looking for a bed so I really need some help please!

Floor plan attached with exact centimetre measurements.

Thanks all!

I saw an add pop up on Facebook or somewhere last week, I usually ignore stuff like that but it actually looked quite sensible. The people had built a platform about a foot or so high. The bed was a mattress on a base and it slid out from underneath when you wanted to use it. They had then built a wardrobe on top of the platform and some kallax. So you had floor space and also the space on the platform.

It would need that free space though to pull out.

If you're on Facebook there's a page for ikea hacks. Lots of people use the Kallax shelves to create smaller length beds to fit in small bedrooms - definitely worth a look

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 10/11/2024 15:40

I don't actually do social media but will try see if any of the Facebook pages are open to view.

The kallax beds are a good idea, but sadly the space behind the kallax will end up being dead space as it'll go against the radiator and wall-accessible on only one side, which is why I thought ottoman would be better?

It's me.....AGAIN! Sorry!

So I think I'm going to get a mid sleeper under the window, it's a shorty so there will be a small amount of space at end of the bed.

My question is, will a floor to ceiling wardrobe on the wall opposite the door make the room look even smaller? Current wardrobe has toys stire on top making it look cluttered and scruffy. At least floor to ceiling wardrobe would cover this? Its the Ikea Platsa I'm thinking of.

Thanks all!

225cm? I'd get a full size cabin bed, with drawers underneath across the short wall.

JC03745 · 26/11/2024 16:14

Some other ideas OP:
-Change the door to open outwards into the hall. This saves 1m2 of floor space within the room
-What is next door? We had a box room next to the main bedroom which was huge. We removed the wall between the rooms and moved it over. Both rooms are much better sizes now.
-The floor the ceiling cupboard is a great idea IMO. Plenty of storage and no area a the top to accumulate dust and rubbish
-Does he have alot of stuffed toys? A toy hammock might help.

Thank you for the ideas!

I was looking at cabin bed with drawers under but that will block the heat from the radiator.

He's not into cuddly toy's at all, he has about 6 sentimental ones which sit on his bed.

Room to the left of the picture next to his door is our bedroom. The other side is the bathroom. Sadly no way to make renovations as bathroom is also small and our bedroom is average sized.

Thank you for wardrobe input, im trying to picture what it will look like in the room being so tall but i just cant picture it!

I'm so indecisive! I just don't want to waste a load of money either, but need it to be practical with storage space 😩

My dc both have rooms that size. One has an Ikea full size bed with drawers under across the room. Crucially, the bed is 30cm forward from the window to allow space for the radiator and then there is a small bookshelf in the corner behind the bed (S) for a bedside light and book.

Then there is plenty of space for a bookshelf (B) or toy storage and a beanbag and rug (green) or a desk.

This bed has enough clothes storage for a child

I'm going to go have a faff with tape measure again and attempt to draw up a plan of how the room will look as I work better visually!

Parietal I have actually looked at that bed!

I've got in my head though that he's currently got a two door wardrobe and three drawer chest of drawers. Admittedly, the wardrobe has a set of drawers inside with toys at the bottom, so really there's only one rail of tops hanging in there. The chest of drawers the bottom one is bedding and bits and pieces. I think I'm thinking that I need to get enough furniture to fit everything in! But really I'm making it difficult for myself.

I think that's why when I found that wardrobe I thought it's a compromise as everything from his current furniture should fit in it and it'll give more floor space as not as wide as current wardrobe and drawers that are next to each other.

Whatever bed you get for under the window there seems to be space for shelving/ bookcase at the foot of the bed. The lower shelves won’t be accessible but the rest will

my dd has the box room and it’s smaller than your ds’s. I have a shorty Argos bed, a narrow wardrobe and drawers. I think a floor to ceiling wardrobe is a good idea.

Could that go opposite the door? IKEA pax has a shallower version too that’s about 35cm deep.

JC03745 · 26/11/2024 16:40

If the radiator is really in the way, can you change it for a slimmer one going up the wall instead?

To add room, could you make the door a barn door, so that it does not open into the room, but slides across the wall outside the bedroom? Have you looked at FB market place for cabin beds, as they are often changed out and often a fraction of the price of new. I wonder if Pinterest would help https://uk.pinterest.com/search/pins/?q=ideas%20for%20childrens%20box%20rooms&rs=typed

I also came on to say it's the radiator that's limiting you.I would consider changing its size and/or position. If you have it moved to the wall behind the door (and perhaps get a tall one, or a double one which can therefore be half the width), where you have to keep that area clear anyway, it gives you more flexibility at the other end of the room. It's better to have a decent size open area in front of the radiator anyway, otherwise you're just paying to heat a piece of furniture.

CatStoleMyChocolate · 26/11/2024 21:13

We have a room that’s even smaller than this so I feel your pain! Especially in terms of the limited choice of shorty mid sleeper beds, there’s a gap in the market there. But looking at the dimensions, yours is much bigger than ours and you could definitely fit a standard single mid sleeper along the non-door long wall.

I would avoid the Jackson Shorty Mid Sleeper from Argos/Habitat - we had one and they’re very awkward to assemble in such a small space. They also do not like being taken apart and reassembled so if there is any chance you might move, I would advise against it.

We are currently on our second child in this room (age 4) and this time we’ve gone for an IKEA extendable toddler bed. You can have it as a toddler bed, short single, or full size single and they come with an extendable mattress too. You can also buy storage bags/boxes to go under the bed - we use ours for bedding and stuff like a blackout blind, pull-ups, etc. We then keep clothes in an 8 x 2 Kallax unit.

Obviously if you have room for proper furniture for clothes, that would be ideal - and floor to ceiling would be the way to go.

I’d definitely look at getting the door re-hung so it opens outwards, and if the radiator is a problem, I’d move it or change it.

SpidersAreShitheads · 27/11/2024 06:20

Hey OP - just a quick reply but have you considered getting a carpenter in to do a custom build?

We’ve just had one in to build a bed over the bulkhead in my DS’ room and he’s incorporated a cupboard and very deep drawers plus a porthole storage thing too. Was surprisingly affordable when you start adding up the cost of the various bits of furniture and it means you can get exactly what you want.

My DS’ room was tiddly too and as a fellow ADHD/ASD woman, I completely get the obsession with trying to get it exactly right!!!

If you think this might be useful, I can upload some photos of what we’ve had done. It’s opened up his room so much!! Best decision I’ve made in a long time 😂

RoseMarigoldViolet · 27/11/2024 07:27

I would suggest not having a wardrobe as a way of saving space. You can keep his clothes in drawers and have hooks on the back of the door for dressing gown (if he uses one) and coat.
We find that our boys don’t really need a wardrobe. Their clothes are foldable and the occasional special event shirt can be hung in our wardrobe as it isn’t used often. Dress-ups can be folded.

sashh · 27/11/2024 08:20

How high is the ceiling OP?

Would you consider a platform with a trundle under? The link is to a DIY but the pictures at the bottom give a few ideas.

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 27/11/2024 20:23

@sashh love the idea of the trundle bed! Ceiling isn't particularly high though.

@RoseMarigoldViolet the back of his door currently has racking with board games and puzzles in which works well.

I've decided to go have a nosey in Ikea this weekend, take measurements with me and see what my options are 🙈 @CatStoleMyChocolate I can check out the extendable bed you've mentioned as well as I didn't know these even existed! Thank you

@SpidersAreShitheads very interested in your room! And yes yes to ADHD and the obsession! The hours I've spent going over and over and over this, honestly it's ridiculous and I'm annoying myself with it now! But then ill get the tape measure back out and stand in his room flapping and stressing and getting myself worked up over it again!

Here you go, OP: we got the Slakt as didn’t fancy the footboard at the end but they have a few. The mattress stuff isn’t super clear but they have adjustable ones to fit these beds and also sell sheets to fit the middle size.
