What do we think about coat stands?

Wondering whether to get one to have near front door in largish hallway. Victorian property.

No DC so just for popping my coat on for convenience and possibly to create a homely, lived in look?

Anyone have experience or views on coat stands?

I have one of those classic bentwood ones. My only caution is probably not relevant to you, as you have a wide hall and no children — if space is limited and several people live with you, it can easily end up with dozens of coats on it, meaning it takes up huge amounts of space.

If I had an older Victorian property I'd 100% have one!

My mum has one, it's fab - super useful and honestly it just looks good in her house. It does create that homely look and it also removes the clutter of bags / coats / umbrellas, she also decorates it for the seasons - in December she'll put a sprig of mistletoe or something on top with a ribbon and it just looks fab.

@Tiggerty your home sounds wonderful 💕

My coat stand was only small and I had 3 dc at the time, (I've 4 now) and it looked like a ghost in the dark 😂
If I had a lovely entrance hall I'd have one, mine ended up buckling so I'm considering coat pegs now like a nursery 😂

We recently stayed in a beautiful holiday cottage with one. It was so lovely I'm considering getting one for our home.

I think they look messy. Much better to hang coats in a cupboard if you have one. Also, I once worked in an office where the fire brigade did a safety inspection and condemned our coat/hat stand for being a hazard.

I'd caution about ultra cheap bentwood ones - they are so flimsy that putting a coat on one makes it fall over. I got a lovely one eventually that is a bit more solid and sturdy. Its a lovely curvy shape.

Old-fashioned ones are cool if you have the space and just a nice coat or two on it. However, they can very easily tip over into visual clutter. There's a difference between it having just your tasteful woollen coat and an umbrella/ handbag and it being buried under multiple garish raincoats.

Bigfatsquirrels · 04/11/2024 08:11

I too am on the opinion they look messy, a carefully placed hat, raincoat and umbrella (long one with a wooden handle) look great but just for decoration. But not when they become full of everything and more on one side so looks like a bulging mess.

But have you looked at the flat wall type stands with a mirror and hat hooks maybe with a couple of draws and an umbrella holder?

GOODCAT · 04/11/2024 08:26

If you have only a couple of smart coats out and they look similar e.g. 2 stylish wool trench coats with similar tones it can look good.

For me, in my real world, the coats I use daily are not home decor smart, so mine are hidden away!

Do you mean hall stand or cost stand? I have both

AnotherHotDrink · 04/11/2024 23:38

I had one when I had small children and they would pull it over if given the chance. It's probably fine otherwise.

Floralnomad · 04/11/2024 23:40

We have one in our hall , we just do a cull every now and then when there are too many coats on it .

Heresoneimadearlier · 04/11/2024 23:41

Only for aesthetic reasons with a hat, a wooden handled umbrella and a cashmere camel coat they look fab, loaded with the family anoraks just looks a mess and the opposite of homely.

TheCompactPussycat · 04/11/2024 23:44

We've had a bentwood one for 20+ years. Just decided to get rid of it as it looks messy and DH has never worked out that if you hang all the coats on the nearest hook it topples over. No coats in our hall at all now - they all live in the utility room. But if that wasn't an option, I'd go for hooks or a hall stand.

I think a hall stand is like a flat unit with hooks on and a coat stand one of those round things with branches to hang coats on. I have the latter. Yes, it's messy but it does the job and I love it. It came from a charity shop years ago.

Cloouudnine · 05/11/2024 08:47

You need a coat/boot/utility cupboard in the hall, and a stand just for your most-used seasonal outerwear.

Otherwise too messy and not the aesthetic you’re hoping for

Davros · 05/11/2024 11:38

@Tiggerty a hall stand is a piece of furniture, usually with hooks, a mirror, umbrella holes etc and it goes flat against the wall. The coat stand is freestanding with hooks all round

Tiggerty · 05/11/2024 12:13

Thank you Davros
Oh, so it's a hall stand I want. Thanks for sharing up my vocabulary

Here is a gorgeous old one and a modern version (which might be Flatpack!)
