So I have never done a ceiling before . Do I need an extension for a roller? I don't have a ladder can I manage with a chair . Have done walls and woodwork before but not ceilings

Don't use a chair, you'll be forever moving it and/or falling off.

I've painted a few ceilings with a long-handled roller and standing on a chair (covered up against splashes), it does depend on the ceiling height though - wouldn't want to do it with a very high ceiling (even if you can reach, if you're at full stretch the whole time it would get very uncomfortable and take longer) or in a very big room. You can get a bit higher with a ladder, but would still need to move it around just as much as a chair, unless you can set up a trestle arrangement. Or if you have a solid-enough table that you can cover up, that would mean a bit less moving?

I’ve just done my ceiling standing on a chair/the bed with a standard roller. I’ve tried doing ceilings before with a pole but find that I can’t put enough pressure on the roller - not enough upper body strength presumably.
My tip is wear a hat/shower cap/plastic bag over your hair.
My ceilings are standard 8’ high, and I’m just over 5’.

I stick the handle from my broom into the roller handle.

That shower cap tip is brilliant!

I prefer a roller extension - then you can just walk around as if you are super tall - but your arms do tire more easily.

Personally I wouldn't use a chair - too much risk of falling off, but then I'm clumsy. Plus, if you're using a roller, you need somewhere near you to put the paint tray. But then I have a ladder and can't imagine painting without it. If you have edges, will you be able to reach them with a brush from the chair?
