Where do you buy nice curtains

We’re looking for neutral colours plain black out curtains.

Just been quoted about 240 quid for a made to measure curtain and now exploring options.

Do you buy fabrics and get someone local to sow it?
Where to get ready made curtains? I looked at next, H&M, J Lewis, Wayfair, Zara, Ikea

What are you all doing about this?

Go shopping for fabric and see how far your £240 goes....... you're somewhat unrealistic.....

Depending on the drop and the pole length, £240 for made to measure is a bloody bargain.

Go to IKEA dunelm, even amazon, and buy off the shelf stuff if your budget doesn't stretch to Bespoke.

KombiNation · 31/10/2024 08:33

We got neutral coloured blackout curtains from dunelm recently. Worth a look :)

rhubay · 31/10/2024 08:42

eBay.

Nobodywantsthis · 31/10/2024 08:45

Dunelm - cost around 200 for made to measure

Daisymay2 · 31/10/2024 08:46

Both my sons bought their blackout curtains from Dunelm. Pretty wide selection of plain colours.

PiggieWig · 31/10/2024 08:47

I’ve always found what I want in Dunelm, either ready made or made to measure. Our Roman blinds were made to measure by them and were much more affordable than the likes of Hilary’s or local firms.

Another vote for dunelm. Got their Luna black out curtains, neutral colour. Come in pencil pleat and eyelet x

JL in an Outlet
TK Maxx/Homesense

ClemmyTine · 31/10/2024 08:48

Dunelm definitely, or the Range maybe?

crumpet · 31/10/2024 08:49

Depends on size, but in the past I have bought ready made from places like Dunelm and then had them altered to fit.

TianasBayou · 31/10/2024 08:53

Curtains2Go for M2M (disclaimer, their blinds are good value, but I haven't bought curtains)

Or Laura Ashley (think Next sell them)

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 31/10/2024 08:55

Another vote for Dunelm

Offcom · 31/10/2024 09:25

M&S also have ready-made blackout curtains, but if you don’t like what’s at Dunelm and IKEA then I think it’s probably more of the same.

pecanroll · 31/10/2024 09:29

Are your windows an awkward size? I tend to buy 229cm drop (which is a standard size) I'm in a new build so that is pretty much ceiling to floor and will do that for any height window, I tend to buy from Next. A lot of their plain ones have options to line, thermal layer etc.

mewkins · 31/10/2024 09:29

Dunelm or Ikea or H&M and I take them up to the length I need/add a header tape if needed.

sueelleker · 31/10/2024 09:32

Dunelm have them on their website.

McCheck · 31/10/2024 09:56

thanks all! Love your suggestions. Thank you

Another vote for Dunelm; that’s where got ours. I do think that quote is very reasonable tho, we were quoted over £1K! Shock

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 31/10/2024 10:24

Every single window of ours is dressed in Dunelm ready made, whether it's roman blinds or curtains. With curtains we've had to have them altered but it's still so much cheaper than made to measure.

We always get comments on them. The only annoying thing with their blinds is that the stringy bits to pull them up can be a bit flimsy.

You could change the string to something sturdier if they're really weedy. I've made and repaired loads of roman blinds and the cord pulls are usually really easy to access. The only exception is the ones that roll onto a cassette inside the headrail - those you have to change the entire cassette.

I love Kylie Minogue curtains, they're gorgeous!

Bluubird · 31/10/2024 15:58

I tend to buy ready made curtains over length (John Lewis and H&M Home are good), and then I get the alterations lady in the local dry cleaners to take them up for me to the exact length I need. It's the cheapest way I've found to do it that still gives you a decent looking finish.

I also think if you want to keep the prices sensible then go for linen curtains- they tend to be reasonably cheap to buy but don't look it once they're been hung. Just spend a bit of time ironing them, and making sure you gather up the header taper properly beforehand, there's lots of tutorials on Youtube.

SqueakyDinosaur · 31/10/2024 18:47

It's also worth looking on eBay - slightly long shot, but you might find something you really love. A friend was looking for a massive thick curtain to put over the front door in her new and very draughty home - found an enormous blue velvet one, incredibly good quality, for I think £30.

Dunelm or Next are a good start
