Looking to dye a deep blue colour fabric to purple. Complete novice so does anyone have any suggestions about how to do this?

You will probably struggle to dye a deep blue fabric purple. Depending on how dark it is You might be able to get a very dark purple which is almost black/brown.

What is the fabric made from? Cotton?

You can only dye to a darker colour so I don’t think this will work well, natural fabrics take dye better than synthetic but if it’s already quite dark I think you’ll likely struggle to get the colour you’re after - sorry!

I don’t think that’s going to work, unless the purple is significantly darker than the ‘deep blue’ in question.

Dylon will 'take' on cotton, linen and viscose so be sure of the fibre content of your fabric!
I think you would need to lighten your dark blue before attempting to change it to purple. I've never used it but Dylon Pre Dye?

Perhaps experiment with a small swatch before you commit.

Thankyou. I was beginning to wonder if I could lighten it first and then attempt to dye. Its for curtains under my daughters bed. Came from brothers room to hers.

Is it cotton ?
If the blue isn’t too deep, eg not navy, you will get purple by dying it fuchsia pink.

Inspect your curtains for signs of fading.
I once attempted to dye cotton fabric that had been curtains, from cream to yellow. The dye took well but, sadly, in vertical bands of different shades of yellow, due to fading of the original fabric from sunlight! They had been lined but hung at a south facing window.

Totally unusable and a waste of dye and electricity!

Even if your curtains are cotton and take the dye, you might find the thread they have been sewn with is polyester which won't take the dye. Depending on the contrast between original and dyed colour all the seams and overstitching may or may not be very visible.

That’s an idea. I have nothing to lose as she hates that it doesn’t go with her bedroom. I’ll try this before I invest in new ones!

I've just bleached some under-bed curtains, they were purple and they're now cream (original had been pink, but I'd dyed them purple years ago).

Depending on age of daughter you could do something fun like bleach tie dye?
