Mirror above sofa does it look ok?

We have a brown leather sofa. Thinking to put an oak mirror above it (landscape). Do you think this works? I was looking for a painting for the space but struggling to find one I like

Yes in general this can work well, especially if your room is longer one way it can make it look wider (assuming the mirror is on the long wall).

Hmm. The mirror is on the short wall

Well I don't think that necessarily matters, but you just don't get the extra room-widening benefits iyswim! Have you got the mirror already, or another big mirror? Get someone to hold it in place and see what you think?

Thanks that’s a good idea. Have another mirror I can test with first

Ok, I might be a bit paranoid but I can’t hang anything on the wall over a sofa or bed. I would have nightmares of it falling on top of me. A mirror would be especially nerve wracking to imagine it falling on my head and all the shards.

Yeah me too. 🙈

Yeah me too. 🙈

And me.

Also it would feel a bit weird to me because the room is designed so that you sit (on the sofa) with your back to the mirror. I would expect to see a mirror on a wall that would be looked at, iyswim.

I’ve a mirror above my sofa, a large antique one, it looks great, it is used, as in you stand in front of it and look, not when you’re on the sofa.

Hmm, I know what you mean about worrying about it falling on you. But we do have a decent gap between sofa and wall . And I think if it were to I attach itself from wall physics woul mean it would just fall directly down? I feel a sofa needs something above it? Or the room looks incomplete. I am not particularly good at home decor / design though so maybe I could actually do without

Sorry I was answering the does it look nice question with a does it look welcoming answer.

Just make sure you are using right hooks and attaching to a wall stud and it should be fine. I know I’m being a bit paranoid and I was thinking if I visited a friend with that home decor, then I’d likely end up sitting anywhere but the sofa.

Nor me. Even though they look nice I just wouldn't be able to relax.

Well I did wonder about using a wall hanging rug. That would solve worries about it falling?

A mirror somewhere in a room can help to lighten it up and if you get one with a wider interesting frame, the frame can add texture too.

I have never had a picture or mirror fall off the wall, so not something I would worry about.

I don't like bare walls, though most of ours are, as need to keep saving to finish the decor generally.

Badgeretta · 28/10/2024 09:41

Worrying about it falling off is definitely a problem if you shove a couple of picture tacks into the plasterboard and hang a 10kg mirror on it! But if you get decent length screws and make certain they hit a stud, and the attachment points on the mirror are likewise strong, it will be fine. I am 38 and have never had anything fall off the wall that's been properly attached to a stud.

I have mirrors above sofas and they are seen by the person sitting opposite or at right angles to the sofa.
As a PP said, use screws and then for additional security attach the mirror with cords to the picture rail with picture rail hooks
I'd also put some pictures/paintings either side of the mirror ( my preference is two pictures one on top of another so four pictures in total)
