Probably a boring as well as a random thread, but here goes! Advice needed! We are moving from a terraced house with 3 double rooms, into a similar house with an attic converted. Very excited to move this week, but when we entered the dining (middle) room, there seems to be a wall blocking the corner of the room? Has anyone else ever had this? Is it due to pipes or something? The bedroom above it also has a wall cutting off the corner, and it takes up valuable space that could have fitted some furniture? Advice plz?! Can i knock it down? What on earth is it there for? Im going to ask a builder pal to come atound and look at it this week. Excited but very nervous to move this week, so any advice is welcome, but plz be nice!

Could be pipes impossible to know without seeing it really. We had something similar in our old house and it was due to pipes that couldn’t be removed, however the boxing of the wall around them was far bigger than it needed to be so we were able to reduce it to free up some space.

Thank you for that :) my hubby reckons the same, we deffo need to get it looked at this week! 😎

You probably won’t know without removing it. Happy moving day!

Isn’t it where the fireplace would have been with the back burner? I’m not sure I’m imagining what you are describing accurately but we had that it a 1930s house. It meant the room was that shape of a page of a book with one corner folded down. Is that what you mean?

Can you post a picture?

My guess would be fireplace too. I've seen houses with fireplaces in the corner. Could possibly be a lovely feature?

Following as this sounds like it could be exciting.

Waiting for photo and hoping for beautiful fireplace

Yes, I’d say definitely the chimney breast for the fireplace. There light not be a fireplace there anymore (and it’s just boarded over) but you could reinstate one if you wanted. Removal of the chimney breast has a cost and mess associated with it so worth considering all options!

Littlejellyuk · 06/12/2024 07:33

Hi guys, an update, (sorry its taken so long, we've had a hellish time with the move) and the builder reckons it is an old chimney breast, but it's been boarded up! I want the wall removed next year or so, and then we can get a side door access into the kitchen 🙏

We've had to replace all the internal doors (quite a few either had no doors downstairs (freezing cold) or curtains?! (Not my taste) 9 doors in total = over 1k

Then ds (age 5) bedroom was decorated and builders discovered that his window wasn't fitted properly and all the plaster underneath was black and mouldy, so builders had to hack off plaster back to brick, then the window secured with timber and insulated.
It's been an expensive 5 week journey so far. We're exhausted and living on a building site.
But at least I did hubby's man cave (attic) so that both hubby, ds (age 5) and the dog can all go upstairs from under my feet 😆 🤣 😂

That looks great OP! It will all be worth it in the end.

Attic room looks lovely!

Warning, removing chimney breasts is not a small job, if it’s brick it will be very very dusty, you will need to either remove the chimney itself off the roof if still there (and repair roof) or put in steels to support it, building control from the council may need to sign off the work. Maybe have a back up plan for the rooms which keeps those corners in place!

Hi guys! Just an update, the house feels like it's taking forever to get straight and organised. Breathing in damp and mould, paint fumes, brick dust, old carpet fibres and wood dust (new doors were plained) has made me run down and poorly. I ended up with a chest infection and despite antibiotics i still cannot shake it off. Asthma has been crap too. Just waiting for the carpet guy to arrive to fit our little boys new bedroom carpet. Then I can start to juggle the furniture and toys back into his bedroom (as it's taken over the whole house), so we can be settled for xmas!
Wish me luck!
