Childs tiny bedroom!

I posted here last year wanting advice on a mid sleeper for sons very small bedroom. Well I have decided against the mid sleeper as i think it will make the room smaller and the room still hasn't been done!

I'm wanting help please! Single bed needed, its got to have storage underneath. Also furniture advice so it's not overcrowded.

Currently has a two door wardrobe with a set of plastic drawers inside under the rail that has toys in. Also has three drawer chest of drawers with clothing and a four box argos version of the kallax which has books and toys. Three shelves on wall holding figures and books.

To get a single bed in the room either wardrobe or drawers will need to go as room isn't wide enough. Please can I have advice on what you've done furniture wise or recommendations please?!

Thanks all!

I had a small room like this growing up. I put my bed down at the end against the radiator going from top to bottom. If your son is quite young then I wouldn’t do this as obviously being pushed against the radiator can be a risk.
But then you’ve got the two long walls free for wardrobe and drawers etc.

Rocknrollstar · 16/10/2024 06:42

Our son had a raised bed with cupboards and a desk underneath,

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 16/10/2024 07:23

@Row23 I've recently changed his room to exactly this and it's made alot more floor space for him which is better. Bed guard to stop him touching the radiator.
What I'm concerned about though is a single bed is wider than his current bed and won't fit his current wardrobe and drawers in so need to change. I'm wondering whether to change to a three door wardrobe or if anyone else can suggest something else they've tried.

@Rocknrollstar he's scared of heights so wouldn't sleep in a really high bed but then a midlseeper I feel would dominate the room and be grown out of quickly.

How old is he? I find drawers much easier for children's clothes.

LaPalmaLlama · 16/10/2024 08:12

I’d reconsider the mid sleeper. My kids grew up in HK with tiny bedrooms and had full size single mid sleepers with drawers underneath. There’s no better way to max out storage and they don’t really grow out of them as it’s a standard size single. You could get away with that and the wardrobe and have rest of space free.

Willsnbills · 16/10/2024 08:15

Will the chest of drawers fit inside the wardrobe? Then you could use both. If not just choose which suits you best. Do you prefer to hang or fold? The main tip is into not overcrowd and to keep things simple.

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 16/10/2024 08:26

@Willsnbills that's exactly it, I don't want to overcrowd the room so I know I have to think carefully.

His wardrobe at the minute has one rail and I've put a set of drawers in the bottom of it which has toys inside.
I like to hang t shirts, jumpers and tracksuits. Trousers, pyjamas and underwear are in the set of drawers.
His bed has stuff under it already so I know I need something with proper storage in it.

Toys are regular gone through and anything not being played with gets donated.

What are the exact dimensions of the room? My son has a tiny room and we got an IKEA bed with drawers underneath but with no headboard which then has a narrow Billy bookcase at the end for shelving. That book bookcase is something like 20cm deep so really thin but can fit loads on. we've also used kallax as a bedside table and chest of drawers to with the big basket inserts in.

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 16/10/2024 08:30

@sausageupanalley the room is 2.6m by 2.3m, Apologies I thought I'd uploaded a picture.
I like the sound of that bed.

To be honest I hadn't thought of drawers under the bed as I always thought there was alot of dead space as they don't go all the way do they, they don't stretch to full width of the bed do they? I had one when I was younger and remember the drawers being really narrow so presumed all the same?!

sausageupanalley · 16/10/2024 08:40

Sorry I hadn't seen your drawing with the dimensions! It looks like ikea no longer sell the single version of the bed we have but you may be able to get it second hand, I just saw this one on ebay. The bed is 200cm long and the narrow Billy is 28cm so you could have it at the end of the bed. It makes really good use of the space, my son had a TV and all his books and trophies etc on it and it looked really nice and neat

If you get separate drawers with rollers which go under the bed then they can be full depth. I would totally get rid of the wardrobe and have a tall chest of drawers and some shelves for toys and books.
You can put hooks on the back of the door to hang a few odds and ends (shirts or suits) or for him or put them in a wardrobe in another room. T shirts are more sensible in a drawer just for space reasons.

Higher up wall shelves might be good for longer term stuff like models he has made or toys which are out of rotation for a bit.

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 16/10/2024 19:45

What puts me off ikea beds is that they all seem longer than a traditional single bed.

On the back of his door he's actually got storage racks which work well.

I do think I need to just have one unit with his clothing, get rid of either the drawers or the wardrobe. Just need to decide what's best and then get the measuring tape put again!

My son has a small room and we have tried a few different options over the years. We found cabin beds made the room feel very cramped and I hated changing the sheets.

The one that's worked best is a normal bed with plastic underbed drawers on wheels for toys.

A billy bookcase with doors with clothes folded in it and a long row of pegs. He hung school bag, coat, blazer when older, pe kit and hoodies and washbag on the pegs. It freed up floor space and wasn't deep.

Then he had a tall drawer unit.

No desk though

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 16/10/2024 20:30

Not worried about a desk in his room as we have table downstairs where he does his colouring and crafts etc.

Ive been looking at cabin beds again but i think you're right, it'll make the room feel smaller. From this I think I need a single bed with full drawers under it. The hunt is on!!!!

I googled "single ottoman bed with drawers" and found loads of good looking options (that are the standard single size and not the Ikea extra long).

I quite like this one as it has shelving in the headboard so you could clip a nightlight onto the shelf and no need for a bedside table, and you can use the trundle for a second mattress so a friend could sleep over, or for more storage.

DS has a divan bed frame, with drawers underneath.
A cabin bed would give you more storage without the height of a mid sleeper.

I'd put a bed across the window, storage filling the narrow gap left, and a triple wardrobe along the wall. Have shelves in place of racks on at least one of the 3 doors.

BUT, seriously consider a desk for future iterations. Coloring at the table is great at primary. By the time he hits secondary, he may well need his own homework corner.

mrsm43s · 16/10/2024 21:16

What about a wardrobe like this that combines drawers and hanging

AudiobookListener · 16/10/2024 21:22

What about a 2ft 6 inch bed instead of standard 3 ft wide single?

I think that's what I'm I'm going to go for, but a three door one

Yes I think bed under window as well. That's where we have recently moved his current bed to and it's opened up so much more floor space.

Yes to a triple wardrobe as well. Going to ry find one with drawers and shelves.

Hadn't even considered a trundle bed to use as storage! But what a good idea! Then when he has sleepovers we can convert to a mattress instead of storage. Thanks for this!

You can also use vertical storage, you can get wall mounted single layer kallax type units which could be mounted along the wall over the door. That would give you lots of space for books, toys or displaying completed LEGO and other bulky stuff that takes up floor space.

Look up ikea kallax bed hacks, you use kallax units laid on their side to create the frame and then add slats. That way you have easy to use and organise storage beneath the bed.

Wholetthedogsoutwhowhowho · 17/10/2024 09:12

I was looking at the kallax bed hacks but getting to the boxes behind the front ones seems a bit of a faff. I like the deep boxes though as he already has one of those in his room.

Wall mount above the door isn't possible as there's a window above it 🙄 but I suppose I could wall mount on the wall with the door on, thank you for this idea as that's something else I hadn't thought of!

I've found a three door Argos wardrobe with drawers that's 111cm wide. Just done a bit of measuring and I'm going to struggle pulling out a drawer from under the bed! Oh no!

My next question is.....bed size, he's currently in a bed which measures 145cm (that's including the slim head and foot board) so I think this is a toddler size. Ppl has mentioned a shorter bed, is that called a shorty or a small single? If so, what age are they suitable up to roughly as I'm finding alot of conflicting info on Google.

Sorry for all of the questions but I need to get this right as planning on keeping this furniture for many years and don't want to waste money!!
