Hi everyone.

So we are moving into a house from a flat. Still rented but much bigger in a few weeks. I feel very lucky for the sake of the children having their own space however I hate my bedroom! It's very old fashioned and dated and we are limited kn what we can do due to landlord requirements and budget.

We can however varnish the wardrobe, put tv on the wall etc.

Could you please give me some ideas for colour scheme, bedding, cushions, blinds, varnish colour for the wardrobe or anything else, lampshade etc.

I have no excitement or inspiration please change this!!
Thank you for and ideas at all.

Please make me love my room!?

I am no interior design expert (at all) but my first thought was to turn it into a cocoon of sorts - went to Abigail Ahern's website for inspiration as she is good on that, using lots of textures, and balancing out a darker colour

I'm dead boring. I'd do everything white as it makes the place look bigger, and add accent coloured curtains, bedding, lamps etc.

Can you paint the wardrobe/what is the wardrobe made of - dark wood?

If real, dark, wood could you do something with rich dark colours on the bedspread, some sort of old fashioned rug (I'm thinking rich reds, Persian rug type appearance) and dark curtains and turn the whole thing into a really warm, cosy, old fashioned room.

I think the alternative would be to paint the wardrobes white if the landlord doesn't mind, but it's a job I suspect will be a bit of a nightmare and take a really long time, so I would be tempted to avoid it.

Also is the bed yours or is the bed going?

Anon3024 · 11/10/2024 20:21

@Ineffable23 thank you SO much for your reply! I like that idea. The bed is going. I have a similar ottoman bed that is black leather. I was thinking to varnish it black. But so not sure! I love the idea of making it cosy! Warm colours etc

I would prime and paint the wardrobe ( if that's allowed). There are lots of gorgeous colours in valspar ( b&q). Then coordinate with rugs, lamps, bedding.

I would prime and paint the wardrobe - I would probably go for a light colour rather than white. And get a bed with fabric headboard (much softer than dark leather), along with cushions, throw, a rug, lamp, plant, wall pics etc.

My first thought was how many spiders you don't see above your head because they're camouflaged

I saw on YouTube someone covering their wardrobe doors with sticker paper that comes off easy as hers was rented too.

I had a bedroom with dark wood wardrobes and I painted the doors very pale grey. It was an arduous task, but looked so much better. If you have the funds you can get it done professionally- they spray paint

I agree with the cosy vibe....I would do a nice dark blue or blue/grey with lighter accessories.

Op are you allowed to varnish it or paint it? As these are very different things.

JMAngel1 · 18/10/2024 08:26

The Ahearn suggestion is bang on - I would do the whole room including the wardrobes (and possibly even the ceiling) a warm dark colour - she does some stunning olive greens that look almost tarnished gold. Then I would have lots of antique brass/gold finishes - not too shiny.

Figsonit · 18/10/2024 23:04

Even if you were allowed to take down the cupboards over the bed, it would open the room up more.

trickyex · 24/10/2024 21:38

I agree if you can take out the high cupboards the room would feel much more open.
I also agree with keeping the wardrobes as they are (much easier than painting) and choosing a warm dark wall colour to tie in with them for a cosy feel.
