I have a small room approx 2x3m that has always ended up as a bit of a dumping ground. I've recently starting using it to work from home but currently just have a desk surrounded by junk. I want to sort it out properly and make it a nice cosy space to work in. It only gets the sun first thing in the morning so can feel quite cold and dark. I was thinking of some nice wallpaper on two opposite walls and painting the other two but completely stuck on what colours to go with and can't seem to find any wallpaper that jumps out at me. Any ideas or suggestions on colours or themes would be really appreciated, I am open to absolutely anything!

Could you post a pic of the room or the floorplan?
I think green can work really well in studies/work spaces. Very calming and peaceful.

I do actually love green and we have a sage green in our lounge so that could definitely work. This is the room:

I wouldn't go for the wallpaper on opposing walls, I think due to the small room it would end up tunnel like. I'd go for 2 adjacent walls.
Can you find a patterned soft furnishing you love? Can base your colour scheme on that, and then possibly include the piece in the room.

Having seen the plan I reckon having all the walls the same will feel much calmer.
It might feel less tight if you were to hang the door opening into the wall if thats an option? Or changing the cupboard door to a curtain?
Will the desk go in front of the window? Is there a nice garden view you can use as inspo, ie curtains or blinds with leaves or flowers?

I would consider having the desk running wall to wall and then add a beautiful roman blind for the window.
Will see if I can find a decent photo or two.

In a small un sunny study, I would like a golden yellow on the walls and some kind of really huge and exaggerated botanical design on any wallpaper and soft furnishings, with soft sagey greens and hints of reds, darker greens and browns.

Or, if that's too much, perhaps a William Morris-like design, but it would look more cottagey then.

@trickyex really helpful ideas thank you!
Great idea to have the desk under the window. There are a lot of trees outside the window so I'm going to bring those colours in (greens and browns) and add a big fluffy rug to keep it feeling cosy

@Giggorata thinking I might keep the walls quite plain and go for some bigger designs on the soft furnishings like you say, possibly a big canvas for one of the walls.

@RhubarbieRhubarbie didn't even occur to me about it feeling tunnel like but that's a great point, definitely don't want to make it feel smaller

I totally agree on avoiding wallpaper on opposite walls. Love the desk under the window idea. Really big canvas on one wall sounds great. I’ve got one from an Etsy site that I love . It was affordable and different, rather than a cookie cooker design from TK Maxx, IKEA etc. if you have greenery outside the window, nature colours and natural textures would be great. Wicker, antiqued oak, warm and touchable soft furnishings in chestnut, charcoals, creams would look great. I use Pinterest a lot for inspiration because I’m not good at thinking up my own designs and ideas.

Sage green or a warm taupe for the walls would be cosy, warming and timeless I reckon.

That sounds brilliant. There's a colour in Dulux Light & Space range called Coastal Glow which I'm currently planning to use in an un-sunny bedroom (after seeing it recommended on another Mumsnet thread!) - I got a tester and it does seem like a great colour.

I've got a bright papered chimney breast with my desk in front but facing out so my background on calls that lovely paper and not my messy multi-use room. I made sure I bought a desk which looked good on the back too. It's also nice to look out at the lovely room and feels lighter.

Then the rest of the walls painted in a colour picked out of the paper. I don't really like feature walls but it works really well in my office.

Lots of nice cushions and prints on the walls and some storage.

Apparently yellow isn't a good colour for work spaces and can increase stress! I was thinking of yellow before I read this. Might be rubbish.

Whilst working with the desk under the window sounds great, I've always found by the time I've got a couple of monitors set up I can't see out the window!
I prefer to have mine slightly to the side allowing me to look out the window - especially useful in a small office for eye strain exercises

I'd also think long term about the kind of work you're doing. Practically what do you need?
Luckily I don't need to do any printing, were fully digital so no need to store paperwork - but I couldn't be without my whiteboard

I do a lot of reading - so a comfy chair is just as important as a proper desk chair

Do you know enough how you want to work? Once you've got those aspects considered you can start filling in around.

Do you like looking at personal items? Do you need sleek minimalism or motivational items?

I'd strongly suggest adding some plants - at the very least a moss wall if you aren't great with plants as good air is important
