North facing long thin room

We are having our garage converted into a bedroom and I'm stuck on colours! It's north facing and will be about 2.5m wide and around 5m long. I was thinking of something like dulux denim drift but worried about it being too dark for such a long/thin space and really not sure what suits a North facing room, any ideas?

I think that there are two schools of thought on this; the designers who embrace the deeper colours, and those who say to stick with light enhancing colour. Personally I find a darker shade can get gloomy and oppressive, so I prefer something lighter but warm. Our north facing bedroom was recently painted in blush pink which was light enough to still be neutral, but warmed the space up too.

is quite useful. Basically, a north-facing aspect will bring out the cooler tones in any colour. Denim Drift will look greyer and colder with northern light, and might look dreary.

It depends too on what you want, though. I think as it’s a bedroom, I might actually embrace the northern light and go with very dark, rich colours.

Thanks that's all really helpful, the other colours I was looking at are the more neutrals. We have F&B ammonite in another room which I like, I'll have a look at the links

Dulux Light and Space range is worth considering. It's a special light reflecting paint. Mixed reviews, some love, some hate. I haven't used it but I am thinking of using a tester in a dark corner with a view to using on dark back walls of rooms lacking light. When we find a house, that is! Which is why I can't tell you what I actually think of it yet!

I think it probably comes down to whether you prefer to embrace the light as it is, or attempt to maximise it. Though I’d have said that the shape of the room might be more of a challenge than paint…?

You need to do something with warm undertones, denim drift won’t work. You can search on farrow and ball for warm colours to give you an idea. Personally I’d go for something like savage ground , joes white, or orange coloured white, as they look really classy on the walls.

Yes the shape is a whole other challenge! But it's the only way of us achieving a much needed extra bedroom so I'm just embracing it. The lights f&b link is really helpful thanks

Consider pinks . They can essentially be used as a neutral and slightly peachy ones do very well in north-facing bedrooms. F and B Pink Ground is a good one for this. If you want blue, their inchyra blue works nicely in a north facing room.

We have our garage converted to an office ( rented lovely house) - it's painted a kind of Matt mid level bluey green and looks lovely- also has skylights and a set of patio doors for light

I have a sort of brownish pink in a north-facing bathroom, and it works really well. (Photo below — confusingly, the manufacturers describe it as brown and ‘Heather’, but I’d call it a brown or fawn pink…)

(And I love Inchyra Blue. That’s what I’d go with myself if I were embracing the northness of a north-facing bedroom.)

Consider using a dark colour on the smaller walls and lighter on the long walls to visually shorten and widen the room.

I'd be tempted to do a darker 'headboard' section behind the bed and lighter version for the rest of the room, be it a pink or a blue shade. It would make the bed area feel cosy and the rest of the room with feel airy. It depends where the bed is. If it's a single in a corner then I'd do the head and the long side the deeper colour.

Sort of like this picture, but maybe not the whole width of the wall, maybe just encompassing the bed and side tables?
