My 11 year old has always had a kids ‘themed’ room and as he’s approaching teenage years he wants to redecorate in a more grown up way.
I’m not very creative and would appreciate any ideas.
TIA

He likes playing his Xbox but has specifically said he doesn’t want to do a ‘theme’ room. But I don’t think I could just paint it all one colour

You could go to dunelm and if he finds some curtains he likes that could be the base . Then pick 2 colours from the curtains and paint the walls , I have often had my sons bedroom 2 different colours , it's always worked well . He might change his mind about a theme if he sees something he really likes 😀

I'd go navy blue walls and a tartan pattern bedding set x 2, and wood effect slatted blinds. Lots of shelving if you have space, one all the way round the room at picture rail height for figures, books, medals, trophies teenage paraphernalia etc all up out of the way but visible. Space allocated for a decent laundry basket and two bins. Done. Add a colour in with pillows and an extra blanket.

I'd start by choosing a suitable bedding set from next or dunelm. I like navy check or gingham for a classic 'boy' style.
Navy plain curtains, neutral walls then framed posters. All easy and cheap to update.

And as PP said lots of storage and their own wash basket/ bag!

You can do a half wall paint or colour blocks. Can add some decals too. Pick the colour from the bedding/rug. Add some artworks reflecting all his hobbies and interests, not just one.

When my son was 11 we redecorated his room. We chose a graffiti mural on one wall and then painted the rest a light bluish grey. Red curtains. We have now changed the furniture as he is 13 next week. He now has a double bed, industrial style desk, shelves and a IKEA wardrobe with hanging space and drawers in it. He loves it and is a simple style for a teen.

Wasn't that price for the mural btw! We chose a cheaper one that came in 6 massive parts.

What about magnolia/ cream walls and then a feature wall in blue/green/grey?

My is 19 now but in his teen years he switched his room from blue/ red and went for dark grey and black decor. However he has magnolia walls.

He has black black out curtains, black desk and chair, grey carpet, grey shelving and a grey curtain rail with his swimming medals hung on it! He has the grey malm drawers etc.

He has Harry Potter bedding (his choice!)

I was really not keen on going so dark but it's his room and actually with the lighter walls it looks really good and is a nice dark space for him at nighttime.

He also works from home some days (works in computers) and has his desk positioned so you can't see his drawers and bed and when he's on calls it doubles up as a smart looking office.

If he doesn't want a theme room, then I would do either navy blue or soft green walls.
Wooden furniture, some nice wooden shelves for displaying some of his favourite things, frame some pictures and hang them. Plain bedding accessorised with some matching gingham/check cushions and a throw. I prefer roman blinds to curtains and you could pick a coordinating fabric.

An accent colour wall is quite a good way to update the decor whilst keeping it ‘classy’ & abit more grown up.
You can then try match the curtains or bedding in the same tone to bring it all together or use a contrast colour like the orange throw to add some more colour. Bold stripes look good too and add some pattern without going overboard.
