Best paint brands?

Used to always use Dulux but I don't find it gives a great finish same with F&B.

There's so many paint companies now I'm unsure who to choose.

Lick, Coat, Little Greene, Edward Bulmer, Benjamin Moore the list is endless. Does anyone have any input?

We have a whole of our downstairs to redecorate over the next few months. Probably in neutral colours so need a good finish that's semi matte.

Thank you

Have u tried B and Q Valspar?

OttersAreMySpiritAnimal · 25/08/2024 15:13

I tend to go to a decorators centre like Brewers. And it probably depends on what's important to me, like right now I need low or no VOCs because DH has cancer that affects his breathing. I like Johnstone's and Albany paint, but if mad for one of the other branded colours I just get them colour matched.

We have a Dulux trade shop near us and the quality is far superior to the dulux you buy in places like B&Q. Costs a bit more but the quality is worth it.

We have just painted our lounge with Lick paint. I highly recommend.

Used most brands, including Dulux Trade. Last two rooms we used Albany and really like the results.

After decades of using F&B, I've recently changed to Little Greene intelligent range. It's way better than F&B.

It’s better coverage but ultimately I think F and B has the edge in terms of subtlety of colour. I’ve always used F andB and don’t get why people diss it.

Newdoggo · 25/08/2024 15:59

I recently tried Wickes own brand for the spare room and it was actually brilliant and so cheap!

MissShapesMissStakes · 25/08/2024 16:01

I always use Little Greene.

Love their colours and coverage. It makes painting easier and not so smelly.

everymeeveryyou · 25/08/2024 17:56

We are slowly (very) upgrading a very old cottage. Little Greene has been good for us and some Benjamin Moore, although found their coverage from the more neutral colours not as good as Little Greene. Our experience is that Little Greene is a pretty thick consistency and we have needed to water down some colours to get an even coverage.

I didn't 'diss' F&B. My recent experience of LG was that it's superior to F&B in terms of coverage. Two coats of LG gave an excellent, even finish.

The last time I used F&B, Joa's White, I had to use four coats of modern emulsion. The colour I was painting on top of wasn't a strong colour, the poor coverage was due to the poor quality of the paint going on - thin, watery, lacking substance.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 25/08/2024 18:31

Wickes own brand is very very good

GoldPlayer · 25/08/2024 22:43

I've found Johnstones excellent and they colour match with F&B LG, Dulux etc

BirthdeighParteigh · 26/08/2024 00:35

I like Mylands the best.

TheOneWithUnagi · 26/08/2024 08:57

Very impressed with little greene intelligent Matt having used it recently. Johnstones durable acrylic matt has always been my go to (usually F&B colour matching) but I found it a bit shiny with a darker colour recently. The LG is very Matt, scrubbable and 2 coats was plenty - also no smell at all.

My only experience with F&B was the estate emulsion which marked so easily and was impossible to touch up, and I found coverage really poor - needed 3 coats and it looked like it wanted another one. The estate emulsion is completely impractical IMO. I would use modern emulsion instead now but TBH I just avoid F&B and get colour matches due to the previous experience.

I'd avoid basic dulux but the trade stuff is decent quality as is the premium Valspar (700?)

jaundicedoutlook · 28/08/2024 09:37

As above, Dulux from their decorator centres has always been good for us. Previously used F&B and wasn’t that impressed, and the painter hated it as it needed an extra coat. We did one room in the own brand paint from Neptune and that looks really good, but was a bit pricey.

gottoget · 29/08/2024 11:43

I don't like Farrow & Ball becuase their coverage is poor in comparison to Little Greene - which means more ££ and more work. My living room is F&B - 4 bloody coats and my kitchen is Little Greene - two coats. And the quality of the finish is about the same - I don't sit in awe of the intensity of colour from F&B it's just paint.

Cobblersorchard · 29/08/2024 11:44

Dulux Heritage is bloody lovely. We are a convert to that, it’s very different to standard Dulux.

Netcam · 29/08/2024 11:47

I've used Lakeland paints for about 20 years, they are the best I've tried, no chemical vapours and really high quality. I wouldn't use anything else. www.lakelandpaints.co.uk/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwuMC2BhA7EiwAmJKRrHrT57bcCfg9WPs01dXAEkM-tx1ulvod-fpndOO8zYymRWuWsOywoxoCJ1MQAvD_BwE

Mt61 · 25/10/2024 08:48

Valspar paint is good B & Q

gottoget · 25/10/2024 09:12

Due to a bit of a fuck up getting paint mixed I ended up painting squares of the following paints on my panelled door - as far as possible they all got the same prep - I was painting for colour differences but I ended up being less concerned with the colour.

Little Greene Intelligent Eggshell
Benjamin Moore Eggshell
Benjamin Moore Scuff X

The Scuff X won my heart - I dragged my fingernail across each paint - Little Greene was the worst performer and experience had taught me this was likely and Scuff X was the shining star - I'm now a very big Scuff X fan - I'm about to paint my stairs and doors and it'll be scuff X without a doubt.

And you can get Scruff X matched to F&B and Little Greene.

Lonelycrab · 25/10/2024 09:15

Johnston’s trade. Colour matches well to F&B in the lighter tones, not so well in the deeper stronger hues ime. Good consistency and coverage, easy to use.
