Renovating our bathroom. Has anyone used Carrara or Calacatta marble in their bathroom and regretted it??
Id loved to use it but being warned off and encouraged to have a porcelain alternative.

Isn't it because you can have underfloor heating under porcelein- and not under marble? Wouldn't marble be freezing?!

Marblemarbles · 05/08/2024 18:53

I don’t know?? We aren’t having underfloor heating if it makes a difference

Wouldn't it be very slippy when wet?

Ponkpinkpink15 · 05/08/2024 18:56

What did they say when they warned you off??

I think a porceleine would be nicer, not quite so cold and 'softer'

Marblemarbles · 05/08/2024 18:56

the slip rating on Mandarin Stone looks ok (R10)

Please don’t have anything slippery on a bathroom floor.

Marble is too hard wearing…
Plenty of interior designers I follow seem to use it though

Water damages marble.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 05/08/2024 19:43

Where do you keep your perfume? Glass bottles don’t bounce on marble.

Mosaic123 · 06/08/2024 17:42

Someone told me not to have marble if you have boys/men in the house. Marble stains easily.

blackcherryconserve · 06/08/2024 17:59

Cold underfoot. Fine in a hot country, I suppose.

SoftPillowAllNight · 06/08/2024 22:18

Turns yellow after a while. Needs sealing and regular cleaning to keep it looking nice. We have Carrara on the floor of the wetroom (done before we bought) and I sealed it when it was new, even so it has yellowed a bit.

justasking111 · 06/08/2024 22:22

Our porcelain floor is lethal when wet so I have towelling bath mats which defeats the object really.

SoftPillowAllNight · 06/08/2024 22:34

The marble isn't too slippery - never had any slipping accidents in 6 years

user556453 · 06/08/2024 22:48

We have Thassos marble showers. They aren't slippery, but I'm not sure I would do the same again. They were extremely expensive, need to be resealed periodically and you have to be careful about what cleaning products are used.

If I was going to do a marble floor, I'd do a mosaic one rather than big slabs or tiles. It solves any slip issues and you won't notice any little bits of discoloration.

Interesting… it is going in the bathroom predominantly used by husband!

I have white marble on bathroom floor, in house when bought it. Not slipped on it and looks nice, not felt it too cold either.

It was stained yellowish round toilet when we moved in but sprayed hydrogen peroxide on it and left overnight and stain removed.

Geneticsbunny · 07/08/2024 10:20

Marble is difficult to cut so can cost more to lay the tiles?

DreamyAmberOtter · 06/09/2024 13:44

Oi, mate! I used Carrara marble in my bathroom, and let me tell ya, it looks absolutely cracking! Proper posh, highly recommended if you're after that classy vibe. I got it done by Mark – he's an absolute wizard with marble, knows his stuff inside out. If you're keen on getting some top-notch work done, just give us a shout, and I'll hook you up with the company's details. Can't go wrong with it, trust me!

Junaluma · 07/09/2024 09:14

I have a calcatta marble bathroom. I love mine - so gorgeous! Be warned, you will see every speck of dirt/hair on the floor! I use floor wipes on the floor.

it doesn’t feel cold to me in winter and I don’t have underfloor heating in there. I don’t regret it.

I've had marble penny tiles previously, but in future I'd go for a porcelain replica. Marble is porous, so will need regular sealing, and is relatively easy to scratch and will stain permanently if anything acidic is split on it. It's lovely to look at but can be fairly high maintenance, especially on a floor.
