Hi Just wondered if any of you out there have recently had a consumer unit relocated or are electricians / or are married to one? - my consumer unit has been moved 7 meters [from being located in a single storey extention to being moved instead to the main body of the house ( cupboard under the stairs)].

Sofar it has been 5 weeks and I still can not turn on a light or use any of the plug sockets. There are wires everywhere. Also the Electrician is charging me 2K for this in his quotation. Some advice on this would be great

Hi Happiest, your completely correct. The billing is a different issue. For now seeing an end in sight is what I’m prioritising. He said he was working this morning for instance ( his choice) & he’s still not here 🙄

Op any electrician can sign off on work already carried out. Personally I would sack him and do not pay him anything else until completion by someone. Then assess at that point whether you need to pay him anything else for work carried out up to this point.

Moving from an extension to the centre of the house doesn't necessarily mean it's easier and just shortening cables, as it's highly unlikely all circuits would already be routed through your new location so there could be a fair amount of work finding existing cable runs and re routing. £2k may not be a rip off depending on the layout and number of circuits.

However, doing it in such a way as to leave you without power for weeks is unnecessary and lazy on the electricians part, and not really acceptable unless he made it very clear up front that was going to happen. He should be able to do most of the work running cable etc before disconnecting old circuits then taking power down for a day to make final connections and consumer unit termination.

hi Mr Dobs, thank you so much for your message. .. very helpful.

i asked him yesterday about what he had done and he said that the cables were a little bit difficult to extract from the extension
( though perhaps he just said that. ) .

After being pinned down about it, it took him less than 2h to get electric back up & all sockets checked . .. yay - lights again 👍 !!!

feel so much better & Will be using this as a very steep learning curve

thank you everyone for helping so much. Im going to close the thread now. Ciao ciao 💕
