Anyone hired a painter recently?

I have had 3 quotes for painting a child's bedroom (approx 10ft x 12ft) and they are all in the region of £750 excluding materials. All 3 painters say it is a 2 day job (walls, ceilings, skirting, door frame, radiator and removal of a freeze).

Is this the going rate for painters these days or should I continue looking? I am thinking about doing it myself if this is the going rate now.

My living room cost that 12 years ago.
Just had a triple height /3 storey hallway , hall, landing, 2 bedrooms and a vaulted ceiling bathroom done -with all woodwork. Dulux diamond white paint used and included .It was 3K and took 6.5 days

Chrispackhamspoodle · 05/07/2024 16:52

My living room. included the paint though and I felt ripped off .The 3k was a bargain as it was a huge job and the paint expensive.

@Chrispackhamspoodle was the 6.5 days for just one painter, so £460 day rate?

Which part of the country are you in?

I got some rooms painted recently and the labour cost was £110/day, but that was one of the cheaper quotes - the others were more expensive, more like £200/day.

I live in an expensive city, not London but less than an hour away from it.

Old house bad state redecorating cost approx 1500 per room. High quality. Took about 5 days per room.

@anotheremma We are in the SE, commuter belt outside the m25.

We paid £1,700 for hall, stairs and landing. Ceiling plastered, banisters stripped and repainted, new skirting, 10 door frames painted. It felt like a lot of money but it took 2 guys the best part of a week and actually we could never have done such a good job.

Any room not involving stairs though I would do myself, I don't mind painting.

Pastimperfection · 05/07/2024 19:03

we paid that for a same size bedroom 2 years ago. I think it is a fair price.

CeaselesslyIntoThePast · 16/04/2025 16:39

I wouldn’t pay that much.

Hemlocked · 16/04/2025 16:53

I recently paid around £3.5k for hallway, stairs, landing, 2 bedrooms and a kitchen-living room, walls, ceilings, all doors and woodwork. including materials. It was a very difficult job and took him a lot longer than expected.

Paid £750 for 3 days - small-ish living room. Took 3 days. SE about 1hr from London. Great job

I’ve recently had a quote for two bedrooms and two bathrooms, one of which has floor to ceiling tiles and the other which is half tiled and was told £3000 plus VAT.

Bulldog01 · 16/04/2025 16:59

We have had many trades, at our home in last 2 1/2 years. Most charge around £200 to £30O daily rate. I would think I would pay from £500 to maximum of £600.00 for 2 days including materials. We went on to my builder.Athough we did our own decorating.Get as many quotes as you can.You could a have a pool of decorators eager to get your business!

IggysPop · 16/04/2025 16:59

To add - in my experience there is no comparison to a skilled decorator. Most of the work goes into the prep. Mine has looked good for years compared to my own attempts looking tatty after 6-12 months.

Im based in south London and we’re having a full 3 bedroom house paint and decorated, including lots of wood work everywhere and stairs also painted and two 8 door fitted mdf wardrobes for £3,800
We were quoted more but we managed to secure a deal as we knew people who worked with them.
This isn’t including any materials btw we’re buying everything from sandpaper to frog tape to paints/primer

Oblomov25 · 17/04/2025 06:36

We had a touch. We hired a retired ex-painter to come round and paint the whole house white. Only a freshen up. It was completely white and in good condition. But still room by room it takes time. A week, 5 days. part time hours. We bought the paint. £1000. Bargain. Can't believe we had such a bargain now. Especially reading these current prices.

I've just had my whole two bedroom new build painted. He painted ceilings, walls and woodwork and charged £200 per day. I had to supply paint etc.

There was no faffing with him, he just got on with it and did a room a day, apart from hallway which took three days.

Reyavisagge · 29/04/2025 14:18

I had a painter like that years ago—super experienced but not into modern stuff. What helped me was checking out residential painting services that combined old-school skills with up-to-date tools and materials. It made a big difference in keeping the quality while still getting a finish that lasts. Some painters are just set in their ways, so comparing a few different ones can be a good move.

CrepuscularCritter · 29/04/2025 14:50

We've been quoted £800 for our sitting room, which is 22 x 15.5. Victorian, so high ceilings, high skirting boards and an original moulding cornice with oak leaves, so fiddly. West Midlands. We've said yes to the quote for completion in the summer.
