Indoor swing for adults

Floridakeyz · 04/07/2024 00:03

Please recommend a nice looking indoor swing which adults can also use. Something with a back rest that will actually sway back and forth a little and not a pod type swing chair which has restricted motion because of the stand.
It will be used by me (70 kgs, I love swinging) and 2 children age 7 and 12. Outdoor won't work since won't get used as much.

It does need to look nice, though. Ideally something freestanding but could technically hang from the ceiling - I will need to check if it will take the weight. I'm redoing my living room furniture on a budget so can plan once the swing is in place.

Thank you!

You want to put a swing in your living room?
Why???

purpleme12 · 04/07/2024 01:08

Because she likes swinging 😂

MistyGreenAndBlue · 04/07/2024 01:14

Hmmm I haven't heard of such a thing. I have a garden swing seat. (I have had several actually as I too love to swing) but I've not heard of an indoor version
Hoping someone comes up with something as I'd seriously consider this too. 😁

Aquamarine1029 · 04/07/2024 01:47

You really have to know what you're doing to hang a swing from an indoor ceiling.

MonsteraMama · 04/07/2024 01:53

Oh god I thought you meant a sex swing, I need to sleep.

Are you sure she didn't?😂

Garlickest · 04/07/2024 02:09

Well, you either need a hefty joist in your ceiling or a free-standing swing with a sturdy A-frame. So, unless you live in an old timber-framed house or a converted warehouse, you'll need the A-frame. This being so, why not get a garden swing? They meet all your requirements.

Considering the title, I'm not surprised.

🎶 Sex swing, Sex swing, here's my Sex swing, you can swing upon it and hope it doesn't fall down 🎶

combinationpadlock · 04/07/2024 04:33

you cant assume your children will both be under 70 kg in 5 years time. You need a weight limit way over that

Not with young children.

OP Sorry the only indoor swings I know of are, as previously mentioned.

I think if you want a swingin your living room you are going to have to get a garden swing and then paint it.

But it does make me think of something that would be made on changing rooms.

Or something that's in a Tech Startup's meeting room.

WindowViper · 04/07/2024 05:34

Wouldn’t you need masses of space in front and behind?

autienotnaughty · 04/07/2024 05:49

You would need a big room with plenty of space and a professional to fit it to make sure it can withstand adult weight

bergamotorange · 04/07/2024 05:52

It will need so much space, otherwise you would just swing into the walls. How big is your lounge?

Darlingtonvoter · 04/07/2024 06:33

You can get indoor hanging chairs and yoga swings but the pressure put on the building structure by having an actual swing attached is much more than your weight because it works like a lever. There's a reason swings are outdoor toys. Get a rocking chair instead for inside, much safer.

Geneticsbunny · 04/07/2024 07:57

If you want to do it properly and you have space then you need to consult a structural engineer and get some ceiling hanging brackets put it by a builder or handyman. They may need to be attached to a steel frame depending on how your house is built . Once you have the brackets in you can attach any swing that you like.

Edited

My living/dining room is about 26ft long and I’m pretty sure the space taken up by the swinging to and fro would mean you couldn’t put anything else ( furniture j in here🤷‍♀️

Also you can get up some fair height on a swing, again, I think you’d be hitting the ceiling in an “average” house.
We had some brilliant swings by where I grew up, proper height and swing space and I loved them… but I must admit, I don’t “get” your train of thought with the indoor idea!

Floridakeyz · 04/07/2024 13:04

It is a double reception room and extended so have some space but also don't need a full span swing. A swing seat could work. Not a sex swing! I actually want to use the swing to break the room into parts.

I meant the title to imply it should take the weight of an adult! I now need to google 'sex swings'. I have led a sheltered life so far lol.

It's too cold for me to use an outdoor swing at least half the year, hence indoor. Let's just call it a swing seat which does have some span.

Wow surely this is a first on MN?
I did think sex swing too, sorry.

I mean, it wouldn't be the worst thing really, it's very appealing to my inner child. The mental imagery keeps making me laugh but I'd be scared of bringing the ceiling down. Plus none of my lot are sensible and would no doubt be dicks. Thinking about navigating turn allocation would give me headache.

I've hung little plant pots from the ceiling but a swing 🤔 I suppose would need to be screwed into a wooden joist? You wouldn't just bang out a swing from the ceiling and hope for the best.

Snerl · 04/07/2024 13:17

Indoor swings aren't uncommon in South Asia. They're called Jhula / Jhoola. Some of them are incredibly ornate but you can get simpler styles if that's not your aesthetic! My Gujarati friend's parents had one in their living room when we were teenagers and it was fantastic!
Etsy have several, e.g.

Snerl · 04/07/2024 13:18

(Oh just seen you want a backrest which the one I've linked to doesn't have, but there are plenty that do!)

Floridakeyz · 04/07/2024 14:07

@Snerl thanks. Yes I have checked some of these out since i have also seen similar in friends' houses but was hoping to get a less ornate / less traditional looking one, something more modern / neutral. Otherwise would stick out a bit in the overall decor. I'll spend some time on etsy today - thanks.

So more like a porch swing of the kind you see in the US than a Fisher Price one?

Floridakeyz · 05/07/2024 10:46

Yes I think a nicer looking porch swing compared to what I have seen online. Something not out of place indoor.
